LAST TIME: Jennifer Crow scored 24 points in leading the Cowgirl basketball team to a 66-58 win over Southwest Missouri State Thursday night. Tari Cummings scored 15 points and added 10 rebounds despite battling the flu. SMS took a six point lead with 12:44 to go in the first half at 13-7. OSU came back and tied the game at 16-16, and went up by as many as nine points with 5:17 left in the first period. The Bears then went on an 8-0 run to end the half down by one at 27-26. OSU came out cold in the second period, and SMS not only took over the lead, but got ahead by as many as eight points with 9:43 to go in the game. The Cowgirls then went on a 7-0 run to lead, 44-43. OSU stayed ahead until there were 56 seconds left in the game, when a Jackie Stiles layup tied the game at 54. A jumper by Crow put the Cowgirls ahead for good, and OSU made 10-of-10 free throws in the final 0:32. "All in all, this is one of the best team efforts that we've ever had," said Coach Dick Halterman. "We had some of our starters that played extremely well. Kara (Faulk) on the boards and Jennifer (Crow) with her all-around game, both offensively and defensively." Stiles, the nation's leading scorer, recorded 29 points for the Bears, leading all scorers. "That's tough when you have to take somebody like her (Stiles) on defense and then try to shoot the ball also. I thought Jennifer did a great job."
WIN OVER SMS SIGNIFICANT: The victory over Southwest Missouri State on Thursday night was significant for several reasons. First, it was just the fourth win in five seasons over a perennial top-20 team of the 1990s. Secondly, it made up for the disappointing 72-69 loss to Tulsa just five days earlier. Third, the Cowgirls held a highly-explosive offense, including the nation's top returning scorer, to 14 points under its season average.
HOME NON-CONFERENCE WINNING STREAK INTACT: With the 66-58 win over Southwest Missouri State, Oklahoma State has won 19 straight home non-conference games, the longest such streak in school history. The Cowgirls are 46-3 in those types of games in the 1990s (74-10 all-time). The only three losses in the 1990s are as follows ... Jan. 25, 1995 - lost to Arkansas, 65-79, Jan. 4, 1992 - lost to UMKC, 58-65, March 14, 1990 - lost to Michigan, 68-77. Here is a list of the current non-conference winning streak ...
