Cowboys Take Well-Deserved Holiday Break
December 22, 1999 | Cowboy Basketball
Dec. 22, 1999
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State men's basketball players and coaches will take Wednesday through Saturday off after remaining unbeaten during their first extended road trip of the season. The Cowboys, who had played seven of their first eight games in the state of Oklahoma, won at UNLV on Dec. 18 and at Washington on Tuesday to improve to 10-0. OSU will return to practice Sunday before facing LSU in New Orleans in the Sugar Bowl Classic on Dec. 30.
Cowboys streaking to start season
For the fifth time in school history -- and the third time since Eddie
Sutton became its coach in 1990-91 -- Oklahoma State has begun a men's
basketball season with 10 straight victories. Sutton's second team at OSU
set a school record by starting the year 20-0, and the Cowboys also reeled
off double-digit victories to start the year two seasons ago. The Cowboys'
1950-51 team won 16 straight to open the year and earned the school's only
No. 1 AP ranking. The only other team OSU went 10-0 to open the season was
1914-15, when the Aggies finished 10-4 after losing their last four
contests, all against Tulsa.
Mason firing on all cylinders
Senior forward Desmond Mason is staking his claim as a postseason awards
candidate. The Cowboys' leading scorer (20.9 ppg), Mason has scored 20 or
more points eight times in the past 12 games dating to last season. The Big
12 player of the week for Dec. 21, he has averaged 25.7 points in the team's
last three games, topped by a 31-point outing at Washington on Tuesday. In
that game, Mason went 11-for-17 from the field to lead the Cowboys to their
third road victory of the young season. He also scored 23 points in the
victory at UNLV to lead all scorers.
Alexander: quick-shot artist
Senior guard Glendon Alexander has made a career out of his quick-release
three-point shot, but this season applying the word "fast" to his game has
another more important meaning. The Cowboys' sixth man has displayed an
uncanny ability to score points in bunches, evidenced by his vital
performances at UNLV and Washington. In both games, with OSU trailing, his
rapid-fire scoring keyed game-turning runs for the Cowboys. Against the
Runnin' Rebels, he scored 10 points in two minutes to lead a 14-0 run that
gave OSU the lead for good, in Seattle, he hit for eight in one minute and
10 seconds as OSU scored 11 straight to defeat the Huskies. Alexander has
hit 17 of 30 (56.7 percent) three-point attempts in the past five games.
Adkins' scoring touch returns
Senior guard Joe Adkins has struggled to get his shooting untracked this
season, but he has shown signs in the past two weeks of returning to form.
Adkins hit all four of his three-point attempts against San Diego State two
weeks ago, and although he hit just two of 11 long-range attempts in the
next two games, he scored 12 points at UNLV and then hit three of four treys
and tallied 13 points at Washington.
Montonati scores no matter the minutes
Senior forward Brian Montonati made a name for himself as a super sub last
season, scoring in double figures 11 times off the bench and doing so five
times in games when he played less than 20 minutes. Although he's stepped
into a starting role -- and parlayed it into four double-doubles and
10-points-plus scoring in every game -- he continues to show a knack for
scoring points in small amounts of playing time. He hit 13 of 16 field-goal
attempts and averaged 14.0 points in the Cowboys' tour of the west despite
playing just 44 total minutes due to foul trouble.
