STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl Basketball team picked up its first win of the 1999-2000 season with a 98-58 victory over the Norrkoping Flamingos of Sweden here Sunday afternoon in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Senior Jennifer Crow led all scorers with 21 points while dishing out a game-high seven assists. Junior transfer Tari Cummings showed off her talents in her first Division I basketball game with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
"I thought we'd shoot the ball a lot better than we did," said OSU coach Dick Halterman. "We scored a lot of points tonight, but several of them came off the free-throw line. I think we'll shoot the ball better as time goes along."
Defensively, Oklahoma State held the Flamingos to just 31.7 percent shooting from the floor, the lowest average by the team so far in four games. The 58 points scored also tied for a team low.
"We played better defensively than I thought we would," said Halterman. "We held them to 27 points in the first half, and that's pretty good, because they've been putting up 60 and 70 points in all their games. So, defensively, we're farther ahead that I thought we would be."
After a rocky start and up just 6-4 with 15:46 remaining in the first half, the Cowgirl started to score at will, up by as many as 26 in the first period. OSU went into the lockerroom leading 47-24. By halftime, Crow and Cummings had 13 and 11 points, respectively, and Cummings was just two rebounds shy of a double-double in the first half.
The freshman point-guard duo of Shelby Hutchens and Chantoya Hawkins did quite well, both recording double-figure scoring totals. Hutchens started the game, and poured in 10 points, while Hawkins scored seven of her 13 in the first half. Sophomore Jessica Spinner scored 11 points in the game.
Oklahoma State will face Arvi Vernitas, a club team from Lithuania, on Friday at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena in its final exhibition game of the season. The Cowgirls will open the regular season on Monday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Preseason Women's NIT in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
