STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl basketball team will open the 1999-2000 season this Sunday as OSU hosts the Norrkoping Flamingos, a club team from Sweden. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
Oklahoma State opens the season with just one senior on the team. Jennifer Crow, an All-Big 12 member a year ago, returns for her final campaign, and will lead a host of talented underclassmen. Devon Magness, Reba Johnson and Toya Releford return for their junior seasons, and are joined by junior college All-American Tari Cummings.
Several sophomores will vie for playing time this season. Coleman Smith and Kara Faulk each started several games last year, while Jessica Bates, Jessica Spinner and Mandy Stuber both got quite a bit of time on the court. Emily Lanie was a walkon last season and earned a scholarship for her second season.
Three freshman enter their first year in a Cowgirl uniform. Chantoya Hawkins is a point guard from Raytown, Mo., and is a potential starter. Shelby Hutchens is a local product for Stillwater High School that can play multiple positions. Leah Wahlgren, from Salina, Kan., is coming off ACL surgery a year ago and has progress well.
The Norrkoping squad will be familiar to Coach Dick Halterman and his staff, as well as Cowgirls' Crow and Magness. As part of the Big 12 All-Star team this past August, they played and defeated the Flamingos, 97-75, in Norrkoping, Sweden.
Following Oklahoma State's game this Sunday, the Cowgirls will host Gija Marijampole, a Lithuanian club team, on Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. That will be OSU's final exhibition game before entering the Preseason Women's NIT.
