No. 21 Cowboys Host Wichita State Wednesday
November 30, 1999 | Cowboy Basketball
Nov. 30, 1999
STILLWATER, Okla. - A pair of unbeatens square off Wednesday when Oklahoma State, ranked 21st by Associated Press and 22nd in the USA Today/ESPN/NABC poll, hosts Wichita State in a regional battle. The Cowboys have won their four games by an average of 27.5 points, and the Shockers have rolled as well, owning a 22.0 margin of victory in their two triumphs.
OSU-Wichita State: The Series
When these former Missouri Valley rivals met on a home-and-home basis in
December 1990 and December 1991, it marked their first matchups since 1964.
OSU owns a 27-6 advantage in the series and is 13-2 in Stillwater although
WSU has won two of the last three overall meetings. Eddie Sutton is 1-1
against the Shockers, having split the home-and-home series in the early
1990s and won the teams' one meeting while he was coach at Creighton.
OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at OSU and his 30th
year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the
NCAA Tournament seven times. Sutton currently owns a career record of
636-252 (71.6 percent) overall and is 206-88 (70.1 percent) at OSU. Sutton
is just the seventh coach to reach 600 coaching victories in 28 or fewer
seasons.

Scouting the Shockers
Wichita State has cruised to a 2-0 record with victories over McNeese State
by 20 and Prairie View A&M by 24. Senior guard Jason Perez has been
outstanding in the Shockers' two victories, scoring 30 against McNeese and
24 against Prairie View. Junior-college transfer forward OJ Robinson has
impressed in his debut games with WSU, recording a double-double against
McNeese State.

Cowboys roll to victory over North Texas
Oklahoma State scored 13 straight points late in the first half to break
open a competitive game, and the Cowboys went on to record a 103-65 victory
over North Texas on Saturday. OSU topped 100 points for the 34th time in
school history and the first time since last Dec. 15, when the Cowboys
defeated Houston Baptist 114-62.
Alexander has understated strong start
Senior guard Glendon Alexander was hot in the season opener against
Appalachian State, scoring 15 points in 21 minutes while hitting five of
eight field-goal attempts and all four of his free-throw tries. After
struggling on the road at Arkansas-Little Rock, he returned to form in
Saturday's game, scoring a game-high 19 points on eight-of-13 shooting.
Alexander has averaged 14.3 points and hit 65.4 percent of his field-goal
tries in OSU's three home games.
Montonati books yet another double-double
After receiving the first start of his three-year OSU career, senior forward
Brian Montonati battled foul trouble in the season opener against
Appalachian State but finished with his fourth career double-double (10
points, 11 rebounds) despite playing just 20 minutes. Montonati bettered
that effort against Idaho, again scoring 10 points but adding a career-high
13 rebounds. He recorded his third double-double of the year and set a
rebounding career high with his impressive 13-point, 15-rebound night
against North Texas.
Gottlieb continues to dish it out
Senior point guard Doug Gottlieb led the nation last season in assists and
recorded the 13th-best single-season assist total in NCAA Division I
history. Already this year, he is well ahead of his school-record assist
average from last season. Gottlieb has 52 assists in the first four OSU
games of the year, moving him ever-closer to the NCAA's list of the top 25
assist men of all time. With 706 assists in his career, Gottlieb needs 57
more to move into the Division I top 25. His current career average of 7.51
per game ranks 14th in Division I history. Duke's Bobby Hurley holds the
total career assists record with 1,076, and Avery Johnson of Southern set a
remarkable record for career average with 12.00 per game.
Webber gets into the act against Mean Green
Alex Webber was one of six OSU players to score in double figures against
North Texas, and the Cowboys' starting center joined Jonzen in having a
perfect evening from the field. Webber, who led OSU in field-goal percentage
last season, hit all five of his shots against the Mean Green to record his
first double-digit scoring performance since he had 13 points and nine
rebounds in a key performance against Oklahoma in last year's Big 12
Tournament.
OSU spoils UALR's debuts of new arena, coach
It was a night of firsts for the Arkansas-Little Rock basketball team Nov.
23: Coach Sidney Moncrief, a star player under Eddie Sutton at Arkansas in
the late 1970s, was in his first game as coach of the Trojans, and UALR was
playing the first basketball game in Little Rock's new Alltel Arena. But OSU
ruined the debut party, using a 14-0 run early in the second half to open up
a close game and winning 93-64 thanks in large part to a 59.0 shooting
percentage.
Mason scores from everywhere against Trojans
Preseason All-American Desmond Mason's game-high 27-point performance
against Idaho on Nov. 20 included a dunk, three three-pointers, six free
throws and a 9-for-14 shooting exhibition. Against UALR, he was even more
impressive, shooting 10-for-12, hitting four threes and adding two more
dunks in a 28-point outing. Having passed four players on the OSU career
scoring list in the past 10 days, Mason now ranks 15th with 1,174 points,
and he needs 23 points to catch Arlen Clark in 14th. He also ranks eighth in
OSU history in rebounds (604).
Jonzen uses size to advantage, burns UALR for 19
6-10 sophomore Fredrik Jonzen took advantage of a small Arkansas-Little Rock
roster and ran the floor well for a 19-point outing Tuesday that included a
seven-for-eight shooting night and a career-best five-for-five effort from
the free-throw line. He continued to find the basket against North Texas,
hitting all five of his field-goal attempts and scoring 15 points. The
Swedish native's previous career scoring high had been eight points, and his
perfect night at the line against UALR may signify the end of his charity
woes -- he shot 42.9 percent last year but is at 68.4 percent this season.
Adkins comes to life in second half vs. Idaho
Senior guard Joe Adkins struggled in the opening frame against Idaho, going
scoreless with six field-goal attempts before halftime. But Adkins caught
fire in a big way in the second half and scored 17 points on seven-for-10
shooting from the field and a three-for-five performance from the
three-point arc. Adkins now ranks 29th in OSU history in career scoring (854
points).
OSU hits the boards hard
Bolstered by double-digit performances by Montonati and Williams, OSU owned
a 53-29 rebounding advantage over Appalachian State in the Cowboys' Nov. 19
victory. The 24-carom margin is OSU's biggest in five years. Ironically, the
last time OSU had a bigger edge on the glass was Dec. 2, 1994, when the
Cowboys, on their way to an 85-58 victory, collected 48 rebounds while their
opponents had 20. The foe in that game? Appalachian State, in the only
previous meeting between the schools. OSU also did some impressive
glass-cleaning work against North Texas, pulling down 58 rebounds, the
third-highest single-game performance in school history.
Williams becomes crowd favorite
Freshman forward Andre Williams became a Gallagher-Iba Arena favorite Nov.
17 when he blocked three Global Sports shots in five minutes of exhibition
playing time. He solidified his position as a crowd hero in the America's
Youth Classic. Playing significant time against Appalachian State due to the
foul troubles of Montonati and Fredrik Jonzen, Williams responded with six
points and 10 rebounds in a spirited effort. Williams became the first
freshman in OSU history to record double figures in rebounds in an OSU
season opener. Against Idaho, Williams again tallied six points -- four
coming on a pair of thundering dunks -- and added three blocked shots. He
scored a career-high seven points and pulled down eight rebounds in the
victory over Arkansas-Little Rock.
Up next
The Cowboys host another team that entered the week unbeaten, Texas-San
Antonio, on Dec. 4 in a 7:05 p.m. tipoff. Next up after those games is a
Sunday, Dec. 12, date in Oklahoma City against San Diego State, coached by
former Michigan boss Steve Fisher.
On the air
OSU games will be broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with KWTV's Bill
Teegins handling play-by-play duties and Tom Dirato, OSU coordinator of
radio & TV, providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their ninth year
as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's
basketball for the 23rd season. The OSU radio network can be accessed
through the Internet (www.okstate.com) or on Teamline. Fans wishing to use
Teamline should call (800) 846-4700 and use team code No. 1750. Use of

Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at his alma mater
with a 206-88 record at the school as well as a 636-252 overall mark in his
30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to
postseason play in eight of nine years and has won 20 games or more seven
times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the
600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years
or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry
Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only two active coaches (Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and only one other coach -- TCU's Billy Tubbs -- joins OSU's boss in having won coach-of-the-year awards in four different leagues. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools -- joining Illinois and Kentucky -- with two coaches among the all-time top 20.

Media issues
The 500-ton crane that previously sat in the north parking lot of

However, contrary to earlier reports in this space, the media pass gate will
remain on the south side of the arena.
