at
Arkansas-Little Rock (1-1 in exhibitions)

Tuesday's Game
OSU, ranked 23rd in the latest Associated Press poll and 25th in the
preseason USA Today/ESPN poll, hits the road for the first time when the
Cowboys visit Arkansas-Little Rock on Tuesday. It's a night of firsts for
UALR: The Trojans are opening their season, it's the first game for new head
coach Sidney Moncrief (a star player on Eddie Sutton's best Arkansas teams),
and UALR is playing its first game in the new Alltel Arena.
OSU-UALR: The Series
These schools met for the first time last December, when OSU won 88-41 in
Oklahoma City, thanks largely to the suspensions of several UALR players.
The Cowboys are 22-7 against current members of the Sun Belt Conference.
OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at OSU and his 30th
year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to the
NCAA Tournament seven times. Sutton currently owns a career record of
634-252 (71.6 percent) overall and is 204-88 (69.9 percent) at OSU. Sutton
is just the seventh coach to reach 600 coaching victories in 28 or fewer
seasons.
About the Cowboys
Oklahoma State has perhaps its most experienced roster ever, with six
scholarship seniors, and last week, the Cowboys started five seniors in
their season opener for the first time on record. 6-5 swingman Desmond Mason
has been tabbed as a preseason All-America and All-Big 12 selection, point
guard Doug Gottlieb led the nation in assists last year and holds or shares
every OSU and Big 12 record in that category. The Cowboys have won 22 or
more games in each of the past two years and reached the NCAA Tournament's
second round those seasons as well.
Scouting the Trojans
Arkansas-Little Rock is in its first year under former two-time All-American
and five-time NBA All-Star Sidney Moncrief. The Trojans return just one
starter from last season's 12-15 squad, but it's a good one -- last year's
leading scorer, Alan Barksdale, who ranked third in the country last season
with 3.8 three-pointers per game (a school-record 95 treys in 27 games).
Junior-college transfer Stan Blackmon started at power forward in the team's
two exhibition games and responded by leading the Trojans in scoring average
in those games (21.5 points).

Cowboys rout Idaho to sweep America's Youth Classic
Idaho scored consecutive unanswered baskets just once in the second half as
OSU completed a sweep of the America's Youth Classic with an 81-50 victory
over the Vandals on Saturday. Oklahoma State shot 53.4 percent from the
field while holding Idaho to just 29.6 percent, and the Cowboys had a 42-27
advantage on the backboards.
Mason scores from everywhere against Vandals
Preseason All-American Desmond Mason's game-high 27-point performance
against Idaho included a dunk, three three-pointers, six free throws and a
9-for-14 shooting exhibition. Mason scored 16 points in the first half,
bouncing back from a somewhat sluggish performance in the Cowboys' opener,
when he tallied "only" 14 points. Mason moved past Richard Dumas and former
teammate Chianti Roberts on the OSU career scoring chart and now ranks 17th
in school history with 1,132 points. He needs just eight points to catch
Raymond Crenshaw in 16th place and just 13 to tie Joe Atkinson for 15th. He
also ranks ninth in OSU history in rebounds (587).
Adkins comes to life in second half vs. Idaho
Senior guard Joe Adkins struggled in the opening frame against Idaho, going
scoreless with six field-goal attempts before halftime. But Adkins caught
fire in a big way in the second half and scored 17 points on 7-for-10
shooting from the field and a 3-for-5 performance from the three-point arc.
Adkins now ranks 30th in OSU history in career scoring (846 points).
Montonati books yet another double-double
Senior forward Brian Montonati earned a reputation last season for high
production in a short time, scoring in double figures 11 times, including
five when he played 20 or fewer minutes. He seems to have continued that
knack this season, after receiving the first start of his three-year OSU
career, Montonati battled foul trouble Friday against Appalachian State but
finished with his fourth career double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds)
despite playing just 20 minutes. Montonati bettered that effort Saturday,
again scoring 10 points but adding a career-high 13 rebounds.
OSU pulls away to open season with victory
Oklahoma State held Appalachian State to just one basket in the first five
minutes of the second half and coasted to an 87-75 victory over the
Mountaineers in Friday's opening day of the America's Youth Classic. The
Cowboys owned a 53-29 advantage in rebounds and forced ASU into 20 turnovers
in winning their 25th straight home opener. OSU is now 59-3 all-time in
Gallagher-Iba Arena openers.
OSU hits the boards hard
Bolstered by double-digit performances by Montonati and Williams, OSU owned
a 53-29 rebounding advantage over Appalachian State in Friday's victory. The
24-carom margin is OSU's biggest in five years. Ironically, the last time
OSU had a bigger edge on the glass was Dec. 2, 1994, when the Cowboys, on
their way to an 85-58 victory, collected 48 rebounds while their opponents
had 20. The foe in that game? Appalachian State, in the only previous
meeting between the schools.
Alexander has understated strong start
Senior guard was a quietly productive player in the Cowboys' two exhibition
games, hitting 10 of 15 field-goal attempts and three of five three-point
attempts and averaging 12.5 points. He continued hot against Appalachian
State, scoring 15 points in 21 minutes while hitting five of eight
field-goal attempts and all four of his free-throw tries. After going
4-for-5 against Idaho, Alexander leads OSU in field-goal percentage (69.2)
among players with at least 10 attempts.
Williams becomes crowd favorite
Freshman forward Andre Williams became a Gallagher-Iba Arena favorite
Wednesday when he blocked three Global Sports shots in five minutes of
exhibition playing time. He solidified his position as a crowd hero in the
America's Youth Classic. Playing significant time Friday due to the foul
troubles of Montonati and Fredrik Jonzen, Williams responded with six points
and 10 rebounds in a spirited effort. Williams became the first freshman in
OSU history to record double figures in rebounds in an OSU season opener.
Against Idaho, Williams again tallied six points -- four coming on a pair of
thundering dunks -- and added three blocked shots.
Up next
The Cowboys return home Saturday to host North Texas. Tipoff for that game
at Gallagher-Iba Arena is at 8:05 p.m., an hour later than usual to
accommodate fans attending the football game at Oklahoma earlier in the day.
Next week, the Cowboys host Wichita State on Dec. 1 and Texas-San Antonio on
Dec. 4, both games tip off at 7:05 p.m.
On the air
OSU games will be broadcast on the OSU Radio Network with KWTV's Bill
Teegins handling play-by-play duties and Tom Dirato, OSU coordinator of
radio & TV, providing commentary. Dirato and Teegins are in their ninth year
as the Cowboys' basketball radio team, and Dirato is calling OSU men's
basketball for the 23rd season. The OSU radio network can be accessed
through the Internet (www.okstate.com) or on Teamline. Fans wishing to use
Teamline should call (800) 846-4700 and use team code No. 1750. Use of
Teamline requires a Visa or MasterCard. Teegins and Dirato will had a busy
weekend Friday and Saturday, they called the action on Friday's game with
Appalachian State, flew to Waco, Texas, to call Saturday's football game
against Baylor, flew back to Stillwater and called Saturday night's
basketball contest with Idaho. Given that weekend, next Saturday will seem
easy -- Teegins and Dirato plan to call Saturday's Bedlam football matchup
with Oklahoma and then to helicopter back to Stillwater for that night's
basketball contest against North Texas.
Preseason publications like the Cowboys
In addition to the two major wire-service polls -- AP ranked OSU 22nd in its
preseason poll, and USA Today/ESPN has the Cowboys 25th -- several other
preseason polls are out, and most put OSU in the top third of the Big 12 and
the top 25 in the nation. Here's a look at what some pubs have to say about
the Cowboys:
- Athlon's college basketball preview has OSU reaching the NCAA's second round and finishing third in the league behind Kansas and Texas in that order. Sutton is picked as the league's coach of the year, and Gottlieb and Mason are second-team All-Big 12 selections.
- Basketball News rates OSU No. 32 in its top 64 and picked fourth in the Big 12 behind Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Mason is rated as the nation's ninth-best "slasher" and is a first-team All-Big 12 pick. Gottlieb is a second-team All-Big 12 selection.
- The Big 12 coaches picked OSU third in the league behind Kansas and Texas and tabbed Mason as an all-conference player.
- Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook says that OSU is the 19th-best team in the country and that Mason is a fourth-team All-American.
- ESPN.com columnist Jay Bilas picks OSU No. 23 in the country.
- Sport magazine tabs OSU at No. 25 nationally.
- On its web site, The Sporting News lists OSU No. 24.
- Ultimate Sports has the Cowboys picked No. 24 in the nation.
Head Coach Eddie Sutton
Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State, 1958) is in his 10th year at his alma mater
with a 204-88 record at the school as well as a 634-252 overall mark in his
30th year of collegiate coaching. Under his guidance, OSU has advanced to
postseason play in eight of nine years and has won 20 games or more seven
times. Sutton is the 20th coach in Division I history to reach the
600-victory mark, and he is just the seventh coach to reach it in 28 years
or less, joining Denny Crum, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp, Dean Smith, Jerry
Tarkanian and John Wooden.
Only two active coaches (Knight and Tarkanian) rank ahead of Sutton in both victories and winning percentage, and only one other coach -- TCU's Billy Tubbs -- joins OSU's boss in having won coach-of-the-year awards in four different leagues. Sutton, who previously coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky, is the only coach in NCAA history to lead four different schools to the national tournament. With Sutton and Henry P. Iba among the 600-win club, OSU is one of only three schools -- joining Illinois and Kentucky -- with two coaches among the all-time top 20.
