LAST TIME - Jennifer Crow and Tari Cummings each recorded a double-double and the Cowgirls used a second-half surge to defeat the Northern Iowa Panthers, 73-55, here Monday night in the first round of the Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament. Crow had game highs in both points and rebounds with 19 and 11, respectively. Cummings contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore Kara Faulk nearly reached a double-double with 15 points and nine boards. Northern Iowa had three players score in double figures as well, and trailed by just three at halftime, 25-22. Poor shooting (OSU 33.3 percent, UNI 25.0 percent) and turnovers (13 for each team) led to the dismal first-period score. Oklahoma State came alive in the second half, connecting on 16-of-29 (55.2 percent) shots from the floor and outscoring the Panthers, 48-33. The Cowgirls also outrebounded Northern Iowa, 44-32. "Its a good start for us," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. "We won the basketball game. We know we have some improving to do, but I really think that with the talent and athleticism and the ability of this team, we will get to be a good ball club if we come together as a team."
COACH DICK HALTERMAN - Dick Halterman is entering his 17th season as the head coach for the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, and brings with him a 288-187 career mark at OSU. Halterman has guided the Cowgirls to eight postseason appearances in the last 11 years, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances (last in 1996) and one Women's NIT appearance (1998). Under Halterman, 13 Cowgirls have been named first-team all-conference, while 27 student-athletes have achieved first-team academic all-conference status. He is a two-time conference Coach of the Year, and was the District V Coach of the Year in 1991. Halterman has taken two conference All-Star teams abroad, including this past August, when he led the Big 12 All-Stars on a tour of Finland and Sweden. That team finished with a 5-1 record.
HALTERMAN ON RADIO/TV - During the 1999-2000 season, fans can catch up with the Cowgirl head coach on both the radio and television. Once the season gets underway, the Coach Halterman Radio Show will be broadcast every Monday evening from 5:30 - 6 p.m. on KGFY-105.5 FM in Stillwater. Fans can call in and ask questions of the OSU coach. The Coach Halterman Television Show will be broadcast on KWEM-TV 31 in Stillwater, which is Channel 3 on Peak Cablevision. Casey Kendrick, program manager at KWEM, will host both the radio and television shows. A day and time has yet to be determined.
COWGIRL BASKETBALL ON THE AIR - Once again during the 1999-2000 season, the Oklahoma State women's basketball games will be broadcast live on KGFY-105.5 FM in Stillwater, part of Stillwater Radio. Kevin Gum, in his 10th season with the Cowgirl broadcast, will handle play-by-play duties, while Casey Kendrick, in his fifth season on the air, will provide color analysis. Fans outside the Stillwater broadcast range will be able to listen to the broadcasts via the internet at www.okstate.com. Gum and Kendrick will be on the air 30 minutes prior to tipoff with pregame analysis, as well as interviews with Coach Halterman and various Cowgirl players.
HOME NON-CONFERENCE WINNING STREAK INTACT - With the 73-55 win over Northern Iowa on Monday night, Oklahoma State has won 17 straight home non-conference games, the longest such streak in school history. The Cowgirls are 44-3 in those types of games in the 1990s (72-10 all-time). The only three losses in the 1990s are as follows ... Jan. 25, 1995 - lost to Arkansas, 65-79, Jan. 4, 1992 - lost to UMKC, 58-65, March 14, 1990 - lost to Michigan, 68-77.
Here is a list of the current non-conference winning streak ...
Date Opponent Score 02-21-95 Wichita State 86-74 11-25-95 USC 85-55 12-17-95 UC-Irvine 68-45 11-22-96 Southern Utah 97-44 11-23-96 Oral Roberts 70-53 12-15-96 Nicholls State 109-56 11-14-97 Arkansas State 79-49 12-19-97 Southwest Texas 75-62 12-22-97 Western Illinois 88-54 12-29-97 Oral Roberts 92-50 12-30-97 Sam Houston State 75-44 03-15-98 Rice 75-52 11-14-98 SMU 64-57 11-27-98 Northwestern State 88-65 11-28-98 UMKC 77-58 12-02-98 Vanderbilt 67-54 11-15-99 Northern Iowa 73-55
PRESEASON WNIT FIELD CUT IN HALF - After Monday night, only eight teams remain in the Preseason Women's NIT field. Boston College advanced with an 83-56 win at Maine, while Duke took care of UNC-Greensboro, 72-47. Fifth-ranked Georgia squeaked by UAB, 76-75, and will play Virginia Tech, a 60-45 victor over Liberty. Texas Christian defeated St. Mary's of Calif., 62-51, and will play UC-Santa Barbara, a 77-56 winner over UNLV.
CROW BACK FOR FINAL SEASON - Cowgirl Jennifer Crow is back for her final season in a Cowgirl uniform, and is looking to move up several OSU career statistical charts. She became the 14th player in school history to record 1,000 points in a career, and she currently ranks ninth on the all-time points scored list with 1,184. Jennifer needs just 26 points to move past Charmaine Johnson (1,210) for eighth, and 59 to surpass Renee Roberts (1,243) for seventh. She already holds the school record for three-pointers made (142) and attempted (377) in a career. Jennifer was named third-team All-Big 12 last season, and was honored as a second-team Academic All-American her junior year.
SOME NEW FACES - There will be some new faces on the court this season for the Oklahoma State Cowgirls as four newcomers are on the 1999-2000 squad. The most obvious is Tari Cummings, a junior college All-American who transferred to OSU from Westark Community College in Ft. Smith, Ark. Also probable in the starting lineup are Chantoya Hawkins and Shelby Hutchens, who will share time at the point-guard position. Coming off the bench will be Leah Wahlgren, who can play either the point or shooting guard positions. Those four make a fine addition to an already experienced team.
AND SOME FAMILIAR ONES - Although Oklahoma State lost four seniors from last season's squad, there are several players back for 1999-2000. The junior class includes Reba Johnson, Devon Magness and Toya Releford. The sophomore class includes Jessica Bates, Kara Faulk, Emily Lanie, Coleman Smith, Jessica Spinner and Mandy Stuber.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
- Sophomore Jessica Spinner is the first Cowgirl to ever wear a single-digit
jersey number (#4).
- In the 1990s, Oklahoma State is ranked 41st nationally based on both total
wins and by overall winning percentage. OSU is 183-108 in the 1990s, good
enough for a .629 winning percentage.
- Should senior Jennifer Crow average double-figure scoring this season, she
will be just the third Cowgirl to do so in school history. Clinette Jordan
and Stacy Coffey are the only two OSU players to ever do so.
- The 12th game of this season will be the 750th in school history. Oklahoma
State is 431-308 (.583) in 26 seasons of Cowgirl Basketball.
- Jennifer Crow had 14 assists and just two turnovers in the two exhibition
games, a 7-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
- Junior Tari Cummings nearly averaged a double-double in the two exhibition
games last week. She finished with 10.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.
- Oklahoma State shot 54.1 percent from behind the three-point arc during
the two exhibition games, including a 6-of-9 performance from freshman
Chantoya Hawkins, and 6-of-10 shooting from Crow. Sophomore Jessica Spinner
connected on 4-of-9 treys, while freshman Shelby Hutchens made 3-of-4
three-point attempts.
Should Oklahoma State defeat Illinois, the Cowgirls will play either TCU or UC-Santa Barbara. OSU is 2-0 all-time vs. the Horned Frogs, the last game on New Year's Day in 1994, an 87-52 win. Oklahoma State has never played UCSB on the hardwood.
