STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's Cowgirl basketball team made a clean sweep of its exhibition games with an 81-72 victory over Arvi Vernitas, a Lithuanian club team, here Friday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Freshman Chantoya Hawkins led all scorers with 21 points, including 5-of-7 >from three-point range. She also had four assists in 26 minutes as the starting point guard. Senior Jennifer Crow added 12 points and dished out a game-high seven assists, while sophomore Kara Faulk pitched in 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
OSU opened the scoring when Crow hit a three pointer just 41 seconds into the game, and the Cowgirls never trailed again. Oklahoma State's biggest lead in the first half was at halftime, when Shelby Hutchens tipped in her own miss with :05 seconds remaining in the period.
The Cowgirls continued to build on the lead, going up by as many as 24 with six minutes left in the game. Then, the Lithuanians went to a full-court press and forced eight turnovers from that point on while outscoring OSU, 25-10.
"I was really disappointed, the last 10 or 12 minutes," said OSU Coach Dick Halterman. "There's no reason to play the way we did. That same bunch of kids, last night in a 10-minute game, just about beat the kids that are starting. It shouldn't have happened to us."
The Cowgirls shot just 44.8 percent from the floor in the game, although they did connect on 11-of-20 shots from three-point range.
Oklahoma State will host the Northern Iowa Panthers on Monday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena in the first round of the Preaseason Women's NIT. The Lithuanians defeated UNI, 87-71, last week.
