STILLWATER, Okla. ? Thirteen games against teams that reached postseason play in 1999 highlight the OSU men?s basketball schedule released today.
In addition to the Big 12 slate, which includes NCAA entrants Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas as well as NIT competitors Colorado, Kansas State and Nebraska, Oklahoma State faces a nonconference slate that boasts three 1999 NCAA Tournament teams and one NIT team.
The nonleague schedule is highlighted by a pair of high-profile doubleheaders. OSU plays at UNLV in the Las Vegas Showdown on Dec. 18, the other game in the Showdown matches Nebraska with Arizona. The Cowboys will also face LSU in the Sugar Bowl Classic on Dec. 30 following a game between Missouri and Kentucky.
Both doubleheaders will be nationally televised ? the Showdown on ESPN and the Classic on Fox Sports Net ? and tip off an OSU television schedule that boasts at least 15 televised games, including six national telecasts.
The Big 12 schedule opens at home Jan. 8, when OSU hosts Texas Tech. Other highlights in league play include a Jan. 19 encounter with 1999 conference regular-season champion Texas, an ESPN-televised Big Monday clash with 1999 Big 12 Tournament Champion Kansas on Feb. 7, and a March 4 contest with in-state rival Oklahoma. The Bedlam game will be the last regularly scheduled basketball game in Gallagher-Iba Arena before the building?s capacity doubles prior to the 2000-01 season.
The Cowboys open their season Friday, Nov. 19, when the America?s Youth Classic, sponsored by the Eddie Robinson Foundation, begins at Gallagher-Iba Arena. On the first night, OSU faces Appalachian State after Oral Roberts faces Idaho, in the opener, ORU coach Scott Sutton, a son of Cowboys coach Eddie Sutton, makes his head coaching debut. The Cowboys play Idaho and ORU faces Appalachian State on Saturday, Nov. 20, in the second and final day of the Classic.
Other key dates on the nonconference schedule are Nov. 23, when OSU visits Arkansas-Little Rock, coached by former Eddie Sutton-coached Arkansas star Sidney Moncrief, in the Trojans? first-ever game in their new ALLTEL Arena, and Dec. 12, when the Cowboys square off with Steve Fisher-coached San Diego State at the Myriad in Oklahoma City.
OSU?s quest for a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance and its eighth berth in 10 years officially begins when practice for the 1999-2000 season opens this Saturday.
