His debut season as a full-time assistant coach in 2008-09 resulted in the first Big 12 team cross country championship in Oklahoma State history to go with seven individual conference championships during the cross country and track and field seasons. The year was capped off by German Fernandez winning the NCAA individual title in the 1,500 meters.
His second year resulted in the Cowboys winning the 2009 NCAA cross country title and OSU’s second straight Big 12 team championship. Ryan Vail became the second Cowboy to win the Big 12 individual crown during McCabe’s time as a full-time coach in 2009, joining Fernandez, who accomplished the feat just one year prior.
It was more of the same during McCabe’s third year on staff, with the Cowboys winning the Big 12 and NCAA cross country team titles and Oklahoma State men’s runners combining to earn five All-America honors and three individual Big 12 championships.
OSU added a fourth straight Big 12 cross country title in 2011 and was the national runner-up. Fernandez won his second conference individual cross country crown.
OSU picked up its third NCAA Cross Country title in four years in 2012 under McCabe, along with another Big 12 cross counrty title. Additionally, Natalja Piliusina captured the 2013 NCAA outdoor 1,500 meter championship. Between the cross country and track seasons, OSU runners earned 17 All-America honors.
All tolled, Oklahoma State’s runners have recorded 50 All-America honors and 34 Big 12 individual titles with McCabe on staff. He assisted in assembling one of the country’s top recruiting classes in 2010, as that group included Nike indoor nationals 5,000 meter champion Kirubel Erassa and two-time Gatorade Washington runner of the year Shane Moskowitz.
McCabe’s primary responsibilities lie in recruiting, equipment and travel.
A two-time all-Big 12 performer on the track, McCabe added all-region cross country honors in 2004 and 2005. He was a three-time academic all-Big 12 selection and was a five-time recipient of the Student Athlete Academic Achievement Award.
McCabe has also served as the race director for Stillwater’s Remember the Ten run since 2006.
A native of Duncan, Okla., McCabe graduated from Oklahoma State in 2006 with a degree in biological sciences and a minor in marketing, then added a master’s degree in health and human performance from OSU in 2008.
