Bio
2024-25 (Fifth Year):
High-flying fifth-year is one of the nation’s most-athletics forwards… Functioned as a sixth-man last season at Big 12 rival UCF while splitting time between the 3 and 4 spots… Played two seasons at New Mexico State after starting his career at Northwest Florida State College.
Steve Lutz on Avery:
“In Chi Chi, we’re getting a great kid who has the rare combination of experience and upside. He’s a supreme athlete who continues to add to his game and will benefit this spring from a chance to explore the NBA Draft waters. Offensively, he can score from just about anywhere, and his size and skill will help create mismatches for us on both ends of the court.”
At UCF (2023-24):
Sixth man on a UCF team that reached the NIT, splitting time between the 3 and 4 spots… Averaged 7.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in 17.7 minutes across 31 games… Posted the team’s second highest offensive efficiency rating, per KenPom (109.9)… Made 36 threes on 34.3% accuracy and finished with as many steals (22) as turnovers (22)… Scored in double-figures 11 times with a season-high of 22 against South Dakota State in the Jacksonville Classic (Nov. 19) and topped 15 points on three other occasions… Put up 19 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting at Cincinnati (Jan. 27) and had 16 points three days later against No. 18 Baylor (Feb. 3) while hitting 4-of-8 from deep… Finished the season with 19 points and season-bests nine rebounds and four steals in the NIT first round matchup with South Florida (Mar. 19).
At New Mexico State (2021-23):
Junior college transfer played his first two Division I seasons at New Mexico State… As a sophomore appeared in 23 games and averaged 4.1 points for an Aggie team that swept the WAC regular season and tournament titles and upset UConn in the first round of the NCAA tournament… Took on a larger role the following year, averaging 8.2 points and 4.5 boards while shooting 41.8% from deep.
Junior College (2020-21):
A three-star recruit who originally committed to UCF over reported offers from the likes of DePaul, Oklahoma State, Rutgers, VCU and Wichita State… Instead spent a season at JUCO powerhouse Northwest Florida State College under former OSU assistant Butch Pierre.
High School:
Turned heads with above-the-rim play and athleticism during the 2019-20 school year helping the post-grad team at Central Pointe Christian Academy (Kissimme, Fla.) to a state championship… Prior to that, starred for Life Christian Academy in his hometown of Richmond, Va., earning 2019 VISAA Division III player of the year honors after leading his team to a state title.
Personal:
Born on Dec. 12… Son of Anthony Cook and Shelia Goodman...Has four siblings.
