Cowgirl Softball topples No. 1 Oklahoma, 6-4
April 15, 2026 | Cowgirl Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Oklahoma State softball team beat the No. 1 team in the nation Wednesday, scoring a 6-4 win over Oklahoma in front of 7,826 fans at Devon Park.
It was OSU's eighth win over the No. 1 team in the nation in program history and its first since beating the top-ranked Sooners in the Big 12 Championship game in 2022. It marked the fourth time that the Cowgirls have beaten No. 1 under head coach Kenny Gajewski, with three of those four wins coming over the Sooners.
Wednesday's game was won thanks largely to consistent offensive pressure and a strong outing in the circle from All-American Ruby Meylan.
The Cowgirls (28-11 overall) scored at least one run in every inning except the first and banged out 10 hits in the contest, highlighted by a home run by Karli Godwin and five extra base hits as a team.
Timely hitting was also a factor, with Jayelle Austin, Godwin and Lexi McDonald all driving in runs in two-out situations.
Pitching in front of a national-TV audience and in front of the largest crowd OSU has seen all season, Meylan shined on the big stage, delivering her 12th complete game of the season and striking out nine. Only two of the four runs she surrendered were earned. She won her 11th consecutive decision and improved to 18-6 on the year. The Cowgirls tagged Miali Guachino (12-1) with her first loss of the season.
The Sooners (40-5 overall) entered the contest leading the nation with a team batting average of .416 and averaging 11.6 runs per game, but Meylan held them to .241 hitting Wednesday. Her nine strikeouts were the third-best total against OU all season.
OSU opened the scoring with a second-inning RBI double from Tia Warsop that scored pinch runner Libby Jaques. OU's Kendall Wells put the Sooners on top with a two-run home run to right in the third, but Godwin's blast – her fourth of the year – deadlocked the score at two after three innings. The Cowgirls scratched a pair of runs across in the fourth inning thanks to RBI singles from Aubrey Schneidmiller and Austin. A run-scoring ground-out by Tia Warsop in the fifth extended OSU's lead to 5-2.
The pressure mounted in the top of the sixth inning, when a two-run double by OU's Abby Dayton brought the score to 5-4. Meylan retired the next batter, Kai Minor, to get out of the inning, then an RBI single from Lexi McDonald in the bottom of the sixth provided an insurance run.
Meylan closed things out with a dominant seventh inning, sandwiching a strikeout of Wells between ground outs from Ella Parker and Gabbie Garcia.
The Pokes return to action when they host No. 16/16 Arizona for a three-game weekend series starting at 6 p.m. Friday in Cowgirl Stadium.
