Opening Tips:
- The Oklahoma State Cowboys welcome the 16th-ranked BYU Cougars for a Big 12 Conference matchup inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
- The Cowboys are looking to build on momentum from Saturday's 81-69 win at Utah. Anthony Roy scored 26 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting and Christian Coleman added a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards to help OSU secure its first Big 12 road victory in nearly two years.
- OSU (15-6) has already matched its 2024-25 regular season win total with 10 games still to play.
- BYU is the third nationally-ranked opponent to invade GIA this season. The Cowboys knocked off 25th-ranked UCF on Jan. 6 but fell 84-71 to No. 9 Iowa State on Jan. 24.
- The Cowboys are looking to avoid consecutive home losses for what would be the first time under Steve Lutz. In his two seasons, the Pokes are a combined 25-6 in GIA (12-2 in 2025-26).
- The home team has won each of the first three Big 12 era meetups between OSU and BYU. The Cowboys have lost twice in Provo but -- two years ago in Stillwater -- pulled a 93-83 upset over a BYU team that came in ranked 19th.
- OSU is 15-0 when scoring at least 81 points (0-6 otherwise).
- OSU's 85.9-point scoring average is just ahead of the school-record pace set by the 2015-16 Cowboys (85.7).
- Seven Cowboys average at least seven points per game, led by Roy (17.5 ppg). The senior guard ranks among the nation's best three-point shooters by both volume (16th, 3.33/game) and accuracy (9th, 44.4%). He's also shooting a league-best 87.5% at the foul line.
- Sophomore guard Vyctorius Miller (13.1 ppg) has been a dangerous perimeter threat in his own right, sinking 33-of-80 (.413) from deep.
- Senior forward Parsa Fallah (13.9 ppg, 59.6 FG%) is averaging a team-best 6.3 rebounds.
- Point guards Kanye Clary (4.9 apg) and Jaylen Curry (4.3 apg) lead one the nation's most aggressive attacks (16th in KenPom adjusted tempo). Curry ranks 29th nationally in A:TO ratio (3.15) and Clary's 7.8 assists-per-40-minutes is the Big 12's second-highest prorated average.
- Head coach Steve Lutz is one of just four active Division I coaches with 100+ career wins and less than five full seasons of experience, joined by Hubert Davis (UNC), Tommy Lloyd (Arizona) and Jon Scheyer (Duke).
Â
Last Time on Cowboy Basketball:
Saturday, Jan. 31 in Salt Lake City | OSU 81, Utah 69
- OSU notched its 15th victory -- matching its entire 2024-25 regular season win total -- and put a stop to a 15-game Big 12 road losing streak.
- Anthony Roy scored a team-high 26 points for the Cowboys, who won for the first time on the Big 12 road since Feb. 21, 2024 at Cincinnati.
- OSU trailed 52-49 with 11:00 remaining but scored the next eight points to take the lead for good.
Christian Coleman supplied two critical baskets during that stretch on his way to a double-double -- 14 points and 10 rebounds. - Down 52-49 near the 11:00-mark, the Cowboys outscored the Utes 32-17 the rest of the way. They made 12 of their final 17 shots to finish at 48.5% from the field.
- Terrence Brown, the nation's seventh-leading scorer, scored 20 points for Utah, which shoot just 37% after halftime and finished the game 5-of-20 from three.
- OSU won the rebounding battle, 43-34, and tallied 16 assists with just eight turnovers.
- Jaylen Curry supplied six of those assists in 21 turnover-free minutes.
Â
More Utah Leftovers:
- Anthony Roy logged his team-high sixth 20-point game of the season and his 19th in 53 career games at the Division I level.
- Roy has made at least one three-point field goal in each of his last 17 games.
- Christian Coleman's double-double was his first in Big 12 play. It was his third overall this season and the tenth of his NCAA career.
- Andrija Vukovic's three-pointer late in the first half came on his first career attempt. The big man has come alive of late, averaging 6.3 points on 10-of-13 shooting over his last four games.
- Kanye Clary tallied four assists and three turnovers, marking the 18th consecutive game that he's finished with more of the former. That streak is the third-longest in program history. Doug Gottlieb, who played from 1997-2000, holds the top two marks (20 and 23).
- OSU improved to 12-1 this season when leading at halftime (27-3 overall under Lutz). The lone loss came at TCU on Jan. 20.
- OSU is now also 12-0 when out-shooting its opponent (23-4 Lutz era) and 12-0 (24-5) when winning the rebounding battle.
Â
Whiteboard Wizardry:
- Per Synergy Sports, OSU ranks 12th nationally in baseline out-of-bounds scoring, averaging 110.9 points per 100 possessions. Synergy estimates the Cowboys are getting roughly 6.8 points per game off BLOBs alone (4th nationally).
- Steve Lutz has also made effective use of his timeouts, after which the Cowboys rank 21st nationally in offensive efficiency (104.7 points per 100 possessions) as well as 21st in defensive efficiency (75.1). Both marks lead the Big 12.
Â
Depth Charged:
- Steve Lutz doesn't put much stock in who starts the game, but rather who finishes.
- Lutz has used 15 different starting-fives this season with 12 different Pokes logging at least one start.
- Seven players have taken a turn as minutes leader (all on multiple occasions). Reserve guard Jaylen Curry had the honor on Jan. 24 against Iowa State (31 minutes), marking the fourth time this season that the minutes leader has come from off the bench.
- Cowboy reserves are averaging just over a third of the team's points (30.1) and have clocked 38.0% of the minutes. Both marks ranks second among Big 12 schools.
- Those fresh legs have helped OSU maintain the Big 12's fastest pace, with nearly one-in-five offensive possessions coming in transition, per Synergy.
Â
OSU vs. Nationally-Ranked Opponents:
- The Cowboys will face two more nationally-ranked teams this week: No. 16 BYU comes to GIA on Wednesday, Feb. 4, then the Cowboys will travel to No. 1 Arizona next Saturday, Feb. 7.
- OSU is 1-3 against AP top-25 opponents this season (1-1 in GIA, 0-2 on the road).
- With their Jan. 6 home win over No. 25 UCF, the Cowboys have now beaten at least one AP top-25 foe in each of the last 28 seasons. The UCF victory was their 141st all-time and 79th at home.
- An 11-point win marked OSU's largest margin of victory over a top-25 opponent since a 64-51 win over No. 14 Texas on Jan. 8, 2022.
Â
On This Date: Feb. 4
- 1981 -- First-place OSU finished off second-place Kansas, 76-73, in triple overtime to remain atop the Big Eight standings. KU's Tony Guy extended the game past regulation with a 24-foot buzzer beater, and OSU missed potential game-winning shots at the end of the first and second overtime periods before finally taking control in the third. Leroy Combs scored a team-high 22 points for the home team, capped by a game-sealing layup with 36 seconds to play in triple OT that gave the Pokes a two-possession lead.
- 1989 – OSU set a Big 8 record with 16 blocks in a 77-73 win over No. 1-ranked Oklahoma at GIA. The Sooners were led by future NBA'ers Stacey King and Mookie Blaylock. Thomas Jordan had seven blocks and freshman Byron Houston added six for the Pokes. Richard Dumas led the scoring and rebounding with 19 points, 13 boards and three blocks of his own.
- 2015 -- Phil Forte made two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining in overtime to send the Cowboys to a 65-63 win at No. 25 Texas.
Â
The Series with BYU:
- BYU leads the all-time series 6–4, though the Cowboys have won two of the three meetings inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
- The teams last played in Stillwater two Februarys ago, when OSU upset 19th-ranked BYU, 93–83, in the schools' first Big 12–era meeting.
- The first-ever meeting between the programs also took place in Stillwater -- on Dec. 15, 1961, when the arena's half-namesake Henry Iba still roamed the sidelines. Ivan Wiley scored 17 points to lead a 61–44 Cowboy win.
- BYU's only win in Stillwater came a decade later on Dec. 15, 1971, a year after Iba's retirement. Behind 21 points from Bernie Fryer, the sixth-ranked Cougars earned an 84–74 victory. Notably, Fryer went on to a long career as an NBA official, working more than 1,800 games between 1978 and 2007.
- OSU is 1–3 all-time in Provo and 0–3 inside the Marriott Center, with its lone road win coming at BYU's former home, Smith Field House, in December 1963.
- The teams have met three times on neutral courts, including BYU wins over Final Four–bound OSU teams in 1995 (Top of the World Classic, Fairbanks) and 2004 (Salt Lake City).
- In between, OSU earned a January 2003 win in downtown Oklahoma City, the first college basketball game ever played at Paycom Center.
Â
Scouting the Cougars:
- BYU finished head coach Kevin Young's first season on a hot streak, winning 15 of its last 19 on the way to a Sweet 16 appearance.
- Young's second Cougar team has picked up right where the first left off, starting the year 16-4 with a No. 16 AP ranking. Their only losses have come to nationally-ranked opponents.
- 6-foot-9 freshman AJ Dybantsa leads the Big 12 and ranks third nationally in scoring (23.3 ppg), helped by a league-best 134 free throw makes.
- Dybantsa has posted three 30-point games this season, including a BYU freshman record 43 points in the Jan. 24 win over Utah.
- He's flanked by a talented backcourt that includes Richie Saunders and Robert Wright III.
- Saunders -- a 2025 first team All-Big 12 pick who was voted the league's most improved player -- has taken yet another leap in his senior season, putting up 19.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 47 steals. He's also knocked down 59 threes on 39.6% accuracy.
- Wright – a Big 12 All-Freshman Team selection last year at Baylor – has chipped in 17.5 points per game along with a team-best 5.2 assists.
- That trio has combined to score just under 70% of the BYU points this season.
- In addition, Keba Keita (7.1 ppg) is the team's top rebounder (7.8) and shot-blocker (36).
- BYU has the nation's 11th most efficient offense, per KenPom, averaging 86.4 points on 48.4% shooting.
- The Cougars are limiting foes to just 71.8 points and outrebounding them by an average of 6.4 per contest.
Â
A Cowboy win would...
- Be their second over a nationally-ranked opponent this season (No. 25 UCF).
- Make them 2-3 this season against top-25 foes, including 2-1 in GIA.
- Narrow BYU's all-time series lead to 6-5 (2-2 Big 12 era).
- Make them 3-1 vs. BYU in Stillwater (2-0 Big 12).
- Boost their home record to 13-2 (26-6 Lutz era).Â
- Make them 1-4 against nationally-ranked teams this season (14-3 against everyone else).
- Be just their third at home this season (12-3).
- Be BYU's first win in Stillwater since 1971.
- Give the Cougars a 7-4 lead in the all-time series.
Â
Up Next: at No. 1 Arizona
Saturday, 3 p.m. CT (ESPN)
- The Cowboys will make a two-game desert road swing through Arizona (Saturday) and Arizona State (Tuesday).
- Arizona -- the nation's No. 1 team -- does not have a midweek game and will take a 22-0 record into Saturday's matchup.
- This will be OSU's first ever visit to the McKale Center. Arizona is 72-6 there under fifth-year head coach Tommy Lloyd. Eleven of the 12 Wildcat home victories this season have come by at least 25 points (an 89-82 win over Arizona State being the lone exception).
- Arizona leads the Big 12 and ranks among the national leaders in scoring offense (11th, 89.5 ppg), rebounding margin (3rd, +13.0), field goal percentage (4th, .516), free throw makes (9th, 19.8) and fastbreak points (10th, 17.9).
- Defensively, the Wildcats are limiting opponents to 68.5 points on 39.4% shooting (17th).
- Arizona won the first Big 12 era meeting between the teams last year in Stillwater (92-78). This will be the only 2025-26 regular season matchup between the schools.
