Maja Stark wins U.S. Women’s Open
June 01, 2025 | Cowgirl Golf
Erin, Wis. – Former Oklahoma State golfer Maja Stark won the United States Women's Open, becoming the program's second major championship winner.
The 25-year-old Stark entered the day in first place with a one stroke advantage over the field and proceeded to dominate Erin Hills, winning by three strokes over second-place Nelly Korda and Rio Takeda. Stark carded a final round of 72 (E), capping off the week at 7 under par.
"It was more of a challenge today," Stark said. "I tried to not look at the leaderboard and play my own game and stay aggressive. I had a friend tell me, you need to be confident and trust yourself. That's what I tried to do, to make myself and my team proud."
Stark becomes the second former Cowgirl Golfer to win a major championship, with the first coming by way of fellow Swedish golfer, Pernilla Lindberg, who won the Chevron Championship in 2018.
With just a one-shot advantage heading into the back nine, Stark turned on the gas and fired two birdies in five holes to extend her lead to three strokes, a lead she would never come close to surrendering.
The win is Stark's first U.S. victory, adding to her already impressive six Ladies European Tour titles. She becomes the third Swedish professional golfer to become a U.S. Women's Open Champion.
Stark spent two years at Oklahoma State before turning pro, earning First Team WGCA All-American and 2021 Big 12 Player of the Year honors as a sophomore while helping the Cowgirls to a national runner-up finish. She also broke the program's season stroke-average record (70.48).
Stark will return for the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, the third major of the season, on June 19-22 at PGA Frisco in Frisco, Texas.
