Cowboy Wrestling Trio Set for World Team Trials
May 14, 2025 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Former Oklahoma State wrestlers Dustin Plott and Dean Hamiti Jr., as well as current Cowboy Carter Young, compete Friday and Saturday at the Senior World Team Trials Challenge in Louisville, Kentucky.
The winner of each weight class qualifies for Final X in Newark, New Jersey, on June 14. There they face the 2025 U.S. Open champion in a best-of-three series for a spot on the U.S. Senior World Team. There are two Final X matchups already determined in men's freestyle (57 kg and 61 kg), which removes those weight classes from the Senior World Team Trials Challenge field.
Coming off an NCAA title just over a month ago, Hamiti (79kg) is set to see many familiar faces from the U.S. Open, where he finished runner-up behind Evan Wick. Hamiti enters the field pre-seeded at No. 2 behind Levi Haines, whom he defeated, 4-2, in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament. If Hamiti wins this weekend's tournament, it sets up a U.S. Open final rematch between him and Wick at Final X.
Four-time NCAA All-American Plott (92 kg) is pre-seeded at No. 4 ahead of this weekend. The winner of his weight class faces Trent Hidlay at Final X, who fell in the finals of the 92-kilogram bracket last season to Oklahoma State head coach David Taylor.
Young (65kg) takes the mat pre-seeded at No. 9. He would face Cowboy RTC member Joey McKenna at Final X if Young bests a loaded 65-kilogram field.
Seeding is not final until after weigh-ins conclude. Adjustments to the seeding will be made if a wrestler drops out of the field for any reason. In that case, the wrestler in question will be removed from the list, and every wrestler underneath will bump up to the next seed.
