NASHVILLE — The Oklahoma State cheer program won the 2025 College STUNT National Championship in the Club Division. The win marks the program's 10th national championship in the sport – all since 2014.
The top-seeded Cowgirls avenged an earlier loss to No. 3 Alma College with a 16-14 victory in Sunday afternoon's final round.
A subset of cheerleading that focuses on its technical and athletic components, STUNT is among the nation's fastest growing female sports, and OSU has established itself as one of its preeminent powers under head coach Lindsay "Salli" Bracken, winning 10 of the last 11 national Club Division titles since 2014. The lone loss came in a tiebreaker at the 2023 championship, while 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19.
STUNT teams compete head-to-head in a series of short routines covering four categories -- partner stunts, pyramids-and-tosses, jumps-and-tumbling and team routine. The squad with the most cumulative points wins the match.
The Cowgirls – made up of athletes from OSU's All-Girl and Large Co-Ed cheer squads – opened their title defense in impressive fashion on Friday with a 12-3 victory over 2023 champion Cal Poly. OSU held a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and steadily extended it, limiting the Mustangs to two points and a tie in a match that ended early due to mercy rule.
The Cowgirls' title hopes took a temporary hit on Saturday with a 15-10 setback to Alma in the winner's bracket final. The teams were tied at 8-apiece heading into the final routines, but the Scots put seven fourth-quarter points on the board to secure the upset.
The loss dropped OSU into the loser's bracket for a Sunday morning rematch with Cal Poly. Tied 2-2 after partner stunts, the Cowgirls conceded just one more point the rest of the way in an eventual 14-3 victory. OSU outscored the Mustangs 3-1 in pyramids-and-tosses, 4-0 in jumps-and-tumbling and 5-0 in the team routine, which came to an early end via the mercy rule.
The victory set up a winner-take-all final against Alma on Sunday afternoon. Again, the Cowgirls grabbed the early momentum during partner stunts and held leads of 6-4 and 9-6 after the pyramids-and-tosses and jumps-and-tumbling segments. The teams traded points in a back-and-forth final quarter. Needing just one more to clinch, the Cowgirls nailed their final routine to secure a 16-14 win and the trophy.
