Cowboy Baseball Drops Midweek Game At DBU
March 11, 2025 | Cowboy Baseball
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 9-7, while the Patriots are now 12-4.
Offensively, the Cowboys collected 12 hits. Jayson Jones led the way with three, while Garrett Shull and Brayden Smith picked up two apiece. Smith and Kollin Ritchie both homered.
Stormy Rhodes took the loss on the mound, surrendering three runs on three hits in an inning of work.
OSU jumped out to a lead in the third inning. Following back-to-back singles by Shull and Nolan Schubart, Jones drove in a run with the third-straight hit.
Two batters later, Ritchie smashed his second home run of the season, a three-run bomb over the wall in right-center field that made the score 4-0.
The Cowboys added to their lead in the fourth, getting a two-out RBI double off the bat of Shull that one-hopped the wall in center field and pushed the advantage to five.
DBU finally got on the board in the sixth as a two-run homer by Grant Jay, his eighth of the season, cut the Cowboys' lead to 5-2.
The Patriots used two more long balls to chip away at the OSU lead.
In the seventh, Luke Heefner's solo shot made the score 5-3, and Tom Poole led off the ninth with an opposite field shot on the first pitch by Sean Youngerman to cut the lead to one.
Later in the ninth, DBU took advantage of an error, and Heefner brought home the tying run on a fielder's choice.
Neither team scored in the 10th, but OSU went back on top in the 11th on Smith's two-run homer to right-center field that put the Pokes up 7-5.
However, the Patriots opened the bottom of the inning with a single and a double to put two runners in scoring position. After an infield single made the score 7-6, a groundout brought home the tying run.
With a runner on third and one out, Heefner lifted a sacrifice fly to foul territory in left field to bring home the winning run.
OSU returns to action Friday when it opens Big 12 Conference play against West Virginia at O'Brate Stadium. The opener is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
