Cowboy Wrestling Routs No. 19 Stanford in Season Opener
November 07, 2025 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – The No. 5 Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 19 Stanford, 33-7, to open its 2025-26 season Friday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Cowboys won eight of 10 bouts, collecting bonus points in six of them. With the win, the Cowboys improved to 1-0 on the season, while the Cardinal dropped to 0-2.
"I thought our guys went out and wrestled pretty hard from start to finish," coach David Taylor said. "I'm proud of them. These kids are hungry, and they want to wrestle. We always talk about wrestling with passion, and I thought that's what they did tonight."
True freshmen Landon Robideau (157) and LaDarion Lockett (165) stole the show as the newcomers faced former All-Americans in their first collegiate matches. Robideau took the fight to the two-time All-American, Daniel Cardenas, scoring a pair of takedowns in the opening period. Robideau tacked on a third takedown late in the final period to secure the major decision over No. 4 Cardenas. Lockett, a Stillwater native, took down No. 4 Hunter Garvin, 2-1, after a gutsy second period where Lockett rode Garvin the entire of the period to secure the riding time point.
No. 9 Konner Doucet made a statement in his return to the starting heavyweight spot after sitting behind NCAA Champion Wyatt Hendrickson in the 2024-25 season. Doucet dominated in his first match back as the starter, collecting six takedowns on his way to a technical fall in the third period. It marked an explosive offensive change from his previous defensive style earlier in his career. For reference, in his 2023-24 season he started every dual at heavyweight for the Cowboys but did not collect a bonus-point victory in those 15 dual matches.
Other true freshman Sergio Vega (141) picked up a technical fall in his first collegiate match, while Cowboys Troy Spratley (125) and Alex Facundo (174) picked up technical fall victories of their own in bouts they were favored in.
After his recent victory at the NWCA All-Star Classic, No. 4 Zack Ryder (184) followed that with a 4-2 victory Friday night. Following Ryder's win, Cody Merrill (197), in his first start as a Cowboy, tallied a takedown in the final 10 seconds of the match to beat Stanford's Angelo Posada.
Cowboy newcomers Richard Figueroa II (133) and Casey Swiderski (149) both dropped their matches to ranked opponents.
Next up, Oklahoma State heads east to Tulsa for the National Duals Invitational, where the Cowboys open the tournament against No. 12 Cornell on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the BOK Center.
