TULSA, Okla. – The No. 5 Oklahoma State wrestling team took down No. 7 NC State, 23-11, in the quarterfinal round of the National Duals Invitational sponsored by Paycom on Saturday night at the BOK Center.
The Cowboys won seven of 10 bouts, with No. 9 Konner Doucet (HWT) picking up OSU's only bonus-point win of the night. The Cowboys improved to 3-0, while the Wolfpack dropped to 2-1. The win marks Oklahoma State's third straight victory over a ranked foe, tying the most since 2006.
"There was some emotion in that dual," said OSU head coach David Taylor. "I thought we did a nice job rising to that… I thought our guys were doing a lot of good stuff. It may not be resulting in points right now, but it will."
True freshmen stole the show again for the Cowboys. Ronnie Raimirez (133) made his first collegiate start against NC State's Zack Redding, and the Ontario, California native nabbed a takedown with 10 seconds left in the bout for the first win of his career. Freshman No. 20 Sergio Vega (141) moved to 3-0 on the season after his win over All-American Ryan Jack by a 2-0 score.
OSU's other two true freshmen stars, No. 5 Landon Robideau (157) and No. 6 Dee Lockett (165), both picked up their third wins of the season in as many contests. Robideau's win over No. 4 Jackson Arrington marked his second top-five win of the season.
The Cowboys' final three wrestlers closed the door on any possible Wolfpack comeback as No. 4 Zack Ryder (184), No. 10 Cody Merrill (197) and Doucet all picked up wins to finish the contest. With Doucet's technical fall victory, he's now the lone Cowboy to collect bonus points in every match this season. In his last season as the starter at heavyweight for the Cowboys in 2023-24, he collected just two bonus-point wins all season over 15 duals.
In a rematch of last season's 125-pound NCAA finals, No. 2 Troy Spratley came up just short of reigning national champion and top-ranked Vincent Robinson by a 3-2 margin. No. 3 Casey Swiderski (149) and No. 17 Alex Facundo (174) both dropped their matches to top-10 foes.
Up next, the Cowboys face the No. 3 Iowa Hawkeyes in a Sunday semifinal at 10 a.m. on mat two at the BOK Center.
