Cowgirl Cross Country Places Second at Cowboy Jamboree
September 28, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Top-ranked Oklahoma State men's cross country took care of business at the 86th annual Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater on Saturday, scoring just 19 points on their way to a 26-point victory over No. 8 New Mexico and a host of other teams.
Brian Musau led the charge for the victorious Cowboys, finishing with a time of 22:55.6, which was nearly 10 seconds faster than the previous 8K course record set by former Cowboy Isai Rodriguez in 2021. Musau beat New Mexico's Habtom Samuel, who is the reigning NCAA cross country runner-up, by eight seconds overall.
Behind Musau and Samuel were four straight Cowboys as Laban Kipkemboi, Denis Kipngetich, Victor Shitsama and Ryan Schoppe placed third-through-sixth on the day to give the Cowboys 19 points as a team. Kipkemboi's time of 23:19.0 ranks fifth in course history and Kipngetich's time of 23:21.0 is ninth in course history.
As a team, the victory was the 27th for the Cowboys in Jamboree history and their second in a row. Musau is also the 23rd Cowboy to win the individual and the fourth different Cowboy in the last four years to do so (Rodriguez in 2021, Alex Maier in 2022 and Kipngetich in 2023).
"I thought the men were unbelievable," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith said. "Our next real competition is the Big 12 meet in five weeks, so we'll take some time to recover from this effort and build up to the postseason."
On the women's side, the Cowgirls placed second as a team behind No. 21 New Mexico with 40 points on the day. Freshman Victoria Lagat was the first Cowgirl across the line in third, with Sivan Auerbach (seventh), Josphine Wanjiku (tenth), Colleen Stegmann (12th) and Jinane Mahi (13th) giving the Cowgirls all five scoring finishers in the top 15.
"We're not quite where we want to be on the women's side just yet," Smith said. "But it's definitely coming and I think we're going to be okay in the long run."
Up next, the Cowboys and Cowgirls will host the Weis-Crockett Invitational at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course on October 19 before kicking off postseason action November 1 for the Big 12 Championships in Waco, Texas.
