Cowgirl Soccer Streak Ends Against Colorado
September 19, 2024 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's unbeaten streak came to an end Thursday night at Neal Patterson Stadium as No. 21 Colorado knocked off the 12th-ranked Cowgirls, 2-1.
With the loss, OSU fell to 8-1-1 and 1-1-0 in Big 12 play, while the Buffaloes improved to 8-1-0 and 2-0-0 in the conference.
A match that was delayed starting for just over two hours due to lightning was statistically even as Colorado outshot the Cowgirls, 11-9, while OSU held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
OSU had a penalty kick opportunity in the 34th minute, but Xcaret Pineda's attempt was saved by Jordan Nytes, who dove to her right to knock away the low shot.
After starting the season with 846:10 of play without allowing a goal, the Cowgirls' streak finally ended in the 37th minute when Hope Leyba collected a pass from Sami Fisher on the right side of the box and delivered a shot off the hands of Grace Gordon and into the net.
The Buffaloes took the 1-0 lead into intermission and doubled it just under seven minutes into the second half as Michaela Rosenbaum sent a ball into the box that Jace Holley headed over Gordon and off the far post from 12-yards out.
OSU trimmed its deficit in half in the 64th minute. After Nicole Ray sent a header off the crossbar, the rebound fell to her, and she delivered a left-footed shot to the near post to make the score 2-1. The goal was Ray's fourth of the season.
The Cowgirls nearly got the equalizer late as a deep shot from Pineda with just 18 seconds remaining was saved over the bar by a leaping Nytes, who fell on the subsequent corner kick as time expired.
OSU returns to action Sunday when the Cowgirls host Texas Tech at 1 p.m.
