Cowgirls Have Big Opening Day in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Members of the Oklahoma State women's tennis team went a combined 5-1 in the opening round of the Battle in the Bay in San Francisco, California, on Thursday.
The day began with doubles, with both Cowgirl pairs advancing. Top-seeded Ange Oby Kajuru and Anastasiya Komar defeated Georgia's Haley Gaudette and Sarah Branicki, 8-4.
At the same time on another court, Gracie Epps and Marcela Lopez played their first match in the orange and black, beating Sally Pethybridge and Alaia Rubio Perez of the University of Portland, 8-5.
In singles, top-seeded Kajuru handled Virginia Tech's Ozlem Uslu, 6-2, 6-3. Lopez then completed an upset to open her fall singles action, defeating No. 14 Amelia Honer from UCSB in a thriller, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (8-6).
No. 11 Komar then defeated Gaudette, 6-0, 6-2, before Epps came up just short in a match against last season's NCAA singles runner-up No. 13 Anastasiia Lopata, 4-6, 6-2, 4-6.
The Cowgirls will be back in action tomorrow for the Round of 16 in singles and the Quarterfinals in doubles.
