Bushnell, Darr Slated to Compete in 124th U.S. Women's Amateur
August 04, 2024 | Cowgirl Golf
TULSA – Oklahoma State women's golfers Ellie Bushnell and Lucy Darr are set to compete in the prestigious 124th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship from August 5-11.
Hosted at Southern Hills Country Club, the event features 156 top amateur female golfers in stroke play and match play format. The competition opens with 18-hole stroke play on Monday and Tuesday before advancing the low 64 scorers, after if-necessary playoffs, to match play. The match-play action begins on Wednesday with the Round of 64 and will continue through Saturday to determine the two golfers for Sunday's 36-hole championship match. Admission is free to attend.
Monday's opening round will see Darr compete in the first morning group at 7:15 a.m. CT on hole No. 10, with Bushnell beginning at 1:28 p.m. on hole No. 1. Bushnell's second round tees off Tuesday on hole No. 10 at 8:28 a.m., with Darr starting action on the first hole at 12:15 p.m.
Southern Hills Country Club is celebrated for its elite status in the golf community, boasting a rich history of hosting major championships. The club's challenging layout, designed by renowned architect Perry Maxwell, has been the stage for eight men's major championships, including the U.S. Open (1958, 1977, 2001) and five PGA Championships (1970, 1982, 1994, 2007, 2022). The course also hosted the 1946 U.S. Women's Amateur, which ended a four-year drought due to World War II.
A par 71, 6,437-yard layout, the field is headlined by 16 USGA Champions, 14 World Amateur Team Championship competitors and 13 golfers in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) top 25.
Bushnell earned her spot with medalist honors after firing a 3-under 69 in her qualifier in Irving, Texas. The rising sophomore enters Southern Hills after a decorated freshman campaign that saw her post a 73.2 scoring average and a top-five finish at the PING/ASU Invitational in March. She also started in all 12 tournaments, becoming the first Cowgirl freshman to do so in six years.
Darr punched her ticket in Lawrence, Kansas, winning a six-person playoff for one spot after birdieing the first hole. One of four incoming freshmen, she heads to Southern Hills three weeks removed from action at the 75th U.S. Girls' Junior Championship. A native of Stillwater, Oklahoma, she is one of two players from Oklahoma in the field.
Round of 64 action of play will air on Golf Channel on Wednesday, with Peacock picking up coverage on Thursday and Friday. Golf Channel returns for the weekend slate to run the semifinal and championship match. Each broadcast will air from 2-5 p.m.
