Cowgirl Golf Caps Opening Day in Norman

NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma State women's golf rounded out opening-day action at The Match Play at Jimmie Austin Golf Club on Monday, falling to No. 1 seed Oklahoma, 4-1.
Fifth-year golfers Ashton Begley and Jenna Solheim also competed individually at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic.
The Cowgirls completed the event's 18-hole stroke play _-over to enter match play seeded eighth in the field. After all morning scorecards were tallied, the Cowgirls entered the opening round against top-seeded Oklahoma.
Marta Silchenko led the Cowgirls with a comeback, 2&1, victory over Gracie Mayo. After dropping four of her first five holes, Silchenko stormed back to knot play after carding a birdie on hole No. 10. Mayo regained an edge on hole No. 13, but the freshman responded, winning the next hole, before icing the match with back-to-back wins on hole Nos. 16 and 17.
Thitaporn Saithip and Nina Lang exchanged a pair of runs on the front nine with Lang jumping to a three-hole lead before Saithip battled back with counters on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes. With an even front nine, Lang gained separation with back-to-back wins on hole Nos. 13 and 14, ending play with a 3&2 win on hole No. 16.
Angelica Pfefferkorn also fell in 3&2 fashion to Reagan Chaney.
Ellie Bushnell showed some fight against Isabella Schlick after trailing five holes after hole No. 10, taking three of the next five holes to trail two shots entering hole No. 17. However, an exchange of pars handed Schlick the victory, 3&1.
Sammie Miller and Savannah Barber were locked in a back-and-forth battle Monday, with neither side grabbing a two-hole lead until the match's final hole. Barber was marked the winner, 2&1, after carding a birdie on hole No. 17.
In Oklahoma City, Begley and Solheim engaged in two rounds of play at Lincoln Park Golf Club's West Course. Begley opened the day tied for fifth after a 2-over 74 and enters the final round tied for eighth at 6-over 74-76 – 150.
Solheim enters tomorrow in 51st as an individual.
The Cowgirls return to Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club for the second and third round of match play, while Begley and Solheim play their final round in Oklahoma City.
