Cowboys Take on Last Chance Olympic Team Trials Qualifier
April 05, 2024 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Several past and present Cowboys will compete at the Last Chance Olympic Team Trials Qualifier this weekend, looking to take a big step forward in the qualification process for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Oklahoma State is sending five current wrestlers, as well as a pair of former competitors, to Fairfax, Va., for the tournament. All seven Cowboys will compete in the men's freestyle division, with the champion of each weight class earning a spot in the upcoming United States Olympic Team Trials, which is set for April 19-20 in State College, Pa.
This weekend's event features some of the country's best wrestlers, with the field ranging from the sport's top young stars to established veterans on the international stage. Oklahoma State's group is hoping to join fellow Cowboys Daton Fix and Alex Dieringer at the Team Trials later this month.
Four Cowboys are set to compete at 65 kg this weekend, as Jordan Williams, Carter Young, Cutter Sheets and alumnus Dean Heil are all registered in the same bracket.
Williams heads to Fairfax fresh off a strong collegiate postseason performance in which he finished runner-up at the Big 12 Championships and reached the Round of 16 at NCAAs. Young qualified for the NCAA Championships in back-to-back years before redshirting in 2024, while Sheets has a 24-10 record through two seasons in Stillwater. Heil, who wrestled for Oklahoma State from 2014-18, was a two-time national champion and three-time All-American for the Cowboys.
Daniel Manibog is joined by former Cowboy Wyatt Sheets at 74 kg, while Christian Carroll is slated to wrestle at 97 kg.
Manibog, a redshirt senior, went 12-5 in 2024 and earned a spot in the lineup for OSU's trip to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in December. Meanwhile, Sheets wrestled at Oklahoma State from 2017-2023 and earned All-America honors twice, including an eighth-place finish as the No. 33 seed in 2021 to become the lowest-seeded All-American in NCAA history.
Despite his youth, Carroll has extensive experience on the freestyle circuit as a champion at the 2023 U20 World Team Trials and represented the United States at the U20 World Championships last summer. Carroll was the only Cowboy to receive a tournament seed this weekend, coming in fourth at 97 kg.
Action in Fairfax begins on Saturday, April 6, with the women's freestyle and men's Greco-Roman divisions. The men's freestyle division takes place the next day, with the opening session at 9 a.m. CT followed by the medal and championship matches at 3 p.m. CT. Fans can follow the Cowboys with streaming options available on FloWrestling.org and live results on Trackwrestling.com.
