Cowboys Headed to Las Vegas for U.S. Open
April 23, 2024 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Several Cowboy wrestlers are set to compete at the U.S. Open Championships in Las Vegas this weekend, as six current members of the team and one newcomer take the first step towards World team membership.
All seven athletes will compete in the U20 brackets, with the champion of each weight class earning automatic qualification into the best-of-three finals at the U20 World Team Trials in June. A top-eight finish this weekend also grants admission into the Trials' Challenge Tournament.
True freshmen Cael Hughes and Jersey Robb headline the group, competing at 61 kg and 86 kg, respectively.
The pair combined for a 21-4 record throughout their first year in Stillwater, including Hughes' major decision in the dual at Wyoming and a clutch victory by Robb to secure the dual win against fourth-ranked Iowa State. In 2023, Hughes placed eighth at the U.S. Open en route to his runner-up finish at the U20 World Team Trials.
Meanwhile, Jaxen Wright is registered at 74 kg as AJ Heeg takes on the 79 kg bracket.
Incoming freshman JJ McComas joins Hughes at 61 kg as the only Cowboy signee headed to Las Vegas. A Stillwater native, McComas broke the top-30 in FloWrestling's final Big Board for the class of 2024 and reached the finals at Junior Nationals in Fargo last summer.
Carlos Alvarado and Hayden Simpson are slated to compete in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions. Alvarado will wrestle at 86 kg in freestyle and 87 kg in Greco-Roman, while Simpson is registered in the 125 kg freestyle and 130 kg Greco-Roman brackets. Simpson competed in both divisions at the event last summer before going on to place eighth in freestyle and fourth in Greco-Roman at the U20 Trials.
Action in Las Vegas begins on Wednesday, April 24, with the U20 Greco-Roman division followed by U20 freestyle competition on Friday and Saturday. Fans can follow along with streaming options, live stats and brackets available on FloWrestling.org.
