Bushnell Paces Cowgirls Early in Phoenix

PHOENIX – Oklahoma State's Ellie Bushnell has a share of the 18-hole lead after Thursday's opening round at the PING/ASU Invitational at Papago Golf Course.
Bushnell – a freshman from Granite Bay, Calif. – fired a 4-under-par, 68 to move into a four-way tie atop the leaderboard with Gile Bite Starkute (Arizona), Constance Fouillet (California) and Ashley Yun (Northwestern).
Bushnell recorded six of OSU's 16 birdies and finished in the 60s for the sixth time this season.
Maddison Hinson-Tolchard (+1, 73) added five birdies of her own to move into third place on OSU's career list (356), passing former teammate Han-Hsuan Yu (352 from 2019-23).
Hinson-Tolchard and Marta Silchenko are tied for 40th individually with teammates Angelica Pfefferkorn (+4, 76) and Thitaporn Saithip (+5, 77) in 65th and 75th respectively.
The Cowgirls (+2, 290) ended the day 11th out of 17 teams in a loaded field that includes eight of the nation's top 25 squads. Host and 15th-ranked Arizona State (-7, 281) is two shots ahead of No. 1 Stanford and three clear of No. 2 UCLA and No. 11 Northwestern.
