Daton Fix Named NCAA Wrestler of the Week
March 12, 2024 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State wrestler Daton Fix was named the NCAA Wrestler of the Week two days after becoming the first five-time champion in Big 12 history, the organization announced Tuesday.
Already holding 133-pound titles from 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023, Fix took advantage of an extra year of eligibility provided by the NCAA in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic to add a fifth and final conference championship last weekend.
Fix made it look easy in front of a hometown crowd, defeating North Dakota State's Fernando Barreto by technical fall in the opening round, 18-3, before pinning Wyoming's eighth-seeded Garrett Ricks in the quarterfinals. The Cowboy then posted a comfortable 4-0 win over No. 4 Derrick Cardinal of South Dakota State to secure a berth in the championship match.
In the finals, Fix scored a pair of early takedowns en route to the 8-5 victory over second-seeded Evan Frost of Iowa State. Fix was already just the 10th wrestler in Oklahoma State history to win four conference titles and is now the only one to capture five.
Fix is the second Cowboy to earn NCAA Wrestler of the Week honors this season, as 174-pounder Brayden Thompson also received the accolade on December 12.
