Cowgirls, Silchenko on Podium After Opening Round of Spring Season, Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Freshman Marta Silchenko carded a 4-under 68 in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic to pace the third-place Cowgirls at the 6,305-yard, par 72 Grand Reserve Golf Club.
After 18 holes, Oklahoma State turned in a 2-under 286 to stand third on the podium in the tournament's 15-team field. The Cowgirls trail Texas A&M and LSU by two and three strokes entering tomorrow's action, while Silchenko is tied for third individually and is one stroke behind the individual leaders, Momo Sugiyama of Purdue and Carla Bernat of Kansas State.
With an emphasis on playing smart golf over the fall and offseason, the Cowgirls led the field in pars for most of the front nine, with Clemence Martin posting 12 straight pars to open the round.
Martin led the field with 16 pars on Sunday.
After hovering in fourth and fifth most of the day, the Cowgirls soared up the leaderboard in the back nine. Entering the final four holes 1-over, birdies from Martin on hole No. 3, Silchenko on hole No. 4 and Ellie Bushnell on hole No. 5 soared OSU into the top three at 2-under through 15 holes.
Silchenko notched her sixth and final birdie on her next hole, placing her as high as second on the individual leaderboard on Sunday.
Silchenko, a native of Riga, Latvia, finished play with the most birdies in the field en route to tying her lowest round as a Cowgirl, matching her closing round at the Illini Women's Invitational in October.
Martin's consistent play persisted, capping the first round with a par 72 to tie for 20th in the field. The junior has been a steady starter, carding a par-or-better score in 7-of-13 rounds this season.
Maddison Hinson-Tolchard recovered from an early pair of bogeys on holes No. 14 and 16 to enter Monday tied for 30th with a 1-over 73. Hinson-Tolchard tallied her 95th-career counting score and is four birdies away from passing Annie Thurman for fifth on OSU's all-time birdie list.
Angelica Pfefferkorn matched Hinson-Tolchard at 1-over on the day, countering three straight bogeys in the front nine with steady closing play, while Bushnell is 2-over par going into the closing two rounds.
Competing as an individual, Sammie Miller concluded the day tied for 89th.
