Cowboys drop Cincinnati, 80-76
February 21, 2024 | Cowboy Basketball
CINCINNATI – Javon Small scored 19 points and Oklahoma State converted three different 1-and-1 free throw opportunities in the final 20 seconds to hold off Cincinnati, 80-76, and secure their first true road.
Jamyron Keller (15 points), Brandon Garrison (14), Quion Williams (12) and John-Michael Wright (11) also scored in double-figures for the Cowboys (12-14, 4-9) who dropped their first six Big 12 games but are 4-3 since.
Williams grabbed eight rebounds and handed out eight of OSU's 20 assists.
The Cowboys shot 55.6% from the field and made 7-of-17 threes (.412). They were 13-of-14 from the free throw line, hitting all 11 attempts over the last 4:00.
Simas Lukosius scored 17 points, Jizzle James had 11 and Jamille Reynolds and Day Day Thomas added 10 each for the Bearcats (16-10, 5-8), who made 50% of their shots (30-of-60) but just 5-of-17 from deep.
OSU took the lead for good on Eric Dailey Jr.'s three-pointer with 3:00 left. Wright drilled another and Williams sank two free throws for a 74-68 edge with 90 seconds to play.
Cincinnati came away with a triple and a layup on its next two possessions to get within a point, but Small made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 19 seconds left to push the lead back to 76-73.
Following a Cincinnati tip-in, Small hit two more with 7.5 seconds to go.
OSU fouled Thomas in the back court to deny the Bearcats a game-tying three. He made the first of two free throws then intentionally missed the second, but Keller was there for the rebound and sank two more 1-and-1 free throws to put the game out of reach.
The Cowboys are back home Saturday afternoon to face Oklahoma (3 p.m. CT, ESPN2).
