Cowboys drop Bedlam battle in Norman

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma outlasted Oklahoma State, 66-62, in a defensive battle at Lloyd Noble Center.
Javon Small scored 17 points, John-Michael Wright had 13 and Quion Williams (12 points, 10 rebounds) secured his fourth double-double for OSU, which fell to 10-14 (2-9 Big 12).
Jalon Moore put up 15 points for Oklahoma (18-6, 6-5), five of them during a pivotal 9-0 run that erased a 56-52 OSU lead with less than 5:00 to play.
The Cowboys twice cut the margin to a point but could get no closer. They had a chance to force overtime in the last 10 seconds, but Rivaldo Soares stripped Small from behind on his way to the basket and Ortega Oweh added a free throw for the final margin.
OSU fell to 2-8 this season in games decided by five points in either direction.
The Sooners, who will join the Southeastern Conference next season, snapped a three-game Bedlam losing streak.
The teams will meet again in two weeks at Gallagher-Iba Arena (Saturday, Feb. 24).
An OU team that entered the night ranked among the top-10 nationally in three-point defense held OSU to 3-of-17 from deep and 31% overall from the field.
The Cowboys hung around anyway, sinking 21-of-28 free throws. They were plus-six in the turnover column (12-6) and plus-five on the glass (35-30), limiting the Sooners to just two offensive rebounds and five second-chance points.
OU shot 45.7% and made 9-of-23 threes. Moore delivered four of the Sooners' nine blocks.
The Cowboys trailed by as many as seven points (20-13) with 4:19 to play in the first half after missing 23 of their first 27 field goal attempts but found success attacking the basket for layups and fouls.
Small hit Mike Marsh for a layup that capped a 9-2 run and knotted the game at 22 with 2:35 remaining in the half.
OU hit three triples in the last two minutes to take a 31-26 lead into halftime, at which point the Cowboys were still just 7-of-32 from the field (.219).
The Sooners were hit with two technicals and a flagrant foul within the first five minutes of the second half, and OSU took advantage, sinking 5-of-6 free throws. Brandon Garrison's three-point play tied the game at 33 and Jamyron Keller pushed the Cowboys in front with a driving layup.
Garrison, however, picked up his third and fourth fouls during that stretch – the latter with 15:57 to play. The lead changed hands five more times before he re-emerged some 14 minutes later.
Small scored twice during a 6-0 OSU spurt. His pull-up jumper in the lane stretched the OSU advantage to 56-52 with just under 6:00 to play, but the Cowboys missed their next five shots.
Moore hit a corner three to get OU's run started and Milos Uzan's free throw tied the game at 56 with 3:51 left.
With 3:05 to go, Le'Tre Darthead made a go-ahead three that struck the front iron before bouncing through.
A pair of Moore free throws gave OU a 61-56 edge with 2:23 showing. It was the largest second-half margin for either side.
Garrison returned and tipped in an offensive rebound to stop the run and Williams sank two free throws to cut the OSU deficit to 61-60 with 1:17 remaining.
The Cowboys got a big defensive stop with, but Small's step-back jumper with 30 seconds left was off-line.
Javian McCollum hit two fouls shots to push the lead back to three and did it again with 9.5 seconds left after Williams scored on a driving layup for OSU.
