Cowgirl Distance Squad Opens Indoor Season with Impressive Showing in Boston
December 07, 2024 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
BOSTON โย Oklahoma State men's and women's indoor track & field opened their seasons at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston, with a pair of school records falling in the Mile and 5,000 Meters.
ย
Laban Kipkemboi kicked things off, breaking the school record in the Mile with his time of 3:54.73, which is tied for the 25th-fastest mark in NCAA history. The previous school record of 3:54.98 was set by Fouad Messaoudi during his torrid 2023 season that culminated in a pair of NCAA titles in the DMR and 3K. Alex Stitt was right behind Kipkemboi as the third-fastest collegian in the field with a mark of 3:56.03, which is sixth on OSU's all-time list.
ย
Later in the day, Brian Musau continued his successful sophomore season by breaking Alex Maier's school record in the 5,000 Meters with his time of 13:11.29. Musau's mark is No. 8 in NCAA history and is the third-fastest time ever run by a U20 athlete. Teammate Denis Kipngetich was not far behind, dropping the third-fastest time in program history with his time of 13:18.33, behind only Musau and Maier.
ย
Musau and Kipngetich are each coming off their second All-America campaigns in cross country, with Musau being named USTFCCCA Midwest Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Runner of the Year this past week.
ย
"It was a great opener for the handful of men we brought to Boston," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith said. "We finished the day with two school records and what should be three NCAA championship qualifying times. The team will now take a much-deserved rest after a long cross country season and then resume the indoor season in the middle of January."
ย
On the women's side, Sivan Auerbach opened action with an Israeli indoor record in the Mile with her mark of 4:33.88, which is also sixth in program history. Immediately following was Madi Surber in the 800 Meters, clocking a time of 2:06.72, tied for ninth in program history.
ย
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will resume action next month at the Arkansas Invitational on January 17 in Fayetteville, Ark.
