Late Flurry Lifts Cowgirl Soccer To Dramatic Win
October 30, 2024 | Cowgirl Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oklahoma State scored three times in the final 13 minutes for a comeback 3-2 victory over Cincinnati in the opening round of the Big 12 Soccer Championship Wednesday morning at CPKC Stadium.
With the win, the fifth-seeded Cowgirls improved to 14-3-3 and advance to the tourney quarterfinals to face fourth-seeded BYU on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Alex Morris delivered the game winner with just 62 seconds remaining, while her younger sister, Reganne, netted her first career goal to start the comeback in the 78th minute. Xcaret Pineda also found the back of the net for the Cowgirls.
After a scoreless opening half in which neither team put a shot on frame, the Bearcats struck first in the 52nd minute as Rylee Felton beat Grace Gordon and delivered a shot to the far post for her seventh goal of the season.
UC doubled its lead in the 67th minute when Jada Arthurs smashed a shot from just outside the top right corner of the box to the near post to put the Bearcats up 2-0.
The Cowgirls were relentless, however, and finally got on the board at the 77:05 mark when Reganne Morris collected a loose ball in the box and sent a shot to the near post past Anna Rexford to make the score 2-1.
Minutes later, Morris nearly got the equalizer off a corner kick, but her attempt was saved by Rexford.
OSU would get the equalizer in the 87th minute. Pineda collected a cross into the box from Ellie Geoffroy and ripped a left-footed shot that deflected off a UC defender and into the net to knot the score at 2-2. The goal marked Pineda's sixth of the season, tying her career high.
The game winner came at the 88:58 mark when Morris took several dribbles and crushed a 30-yard shot top shelf to the far post. The goal was the fourth of the season for Morris.
