Settling In – How Saylor Davis Has Acclimated to Life in Stillwater
January 18, 2024 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER — Freshman Saylor Davis quickly learned that when the people involved with Oklahoma State Softball say "family," they mean it.
Moving seven and a half hours from home is a daunting adventure, but one she was ready for.
"I was excited but also nervous," Davis said. "Getting to know all the girls on the team helped a lot, they're family."
Hailing from Montgomery, Texas, a town with a population of roughly 2,000, Davis felt like Stillwater was right for her.
"I think the small town feel and just the feeling I got when I first stepped on campus," Davis said. "I knew this was where I wanted to spend the next four years."
One highlight for her since arriving at OSU is getting coached by Carrie Eberle, a two-time All-American who helped lead the Cowgirls to the 2021 Women's College World Series.
"I love her so much," Davis remarked. "She has a way of talking to me where I understand exactly what she's trying to get me to do."
The main goal the two had this fall was to work on Davis's consistency.
Mound presence and self-talk, important attributes for a pitcher, are two elements of Davis's game that she and Eberle have targeted since her arrival and doing so has led to the desired improvement in consistency.
"Having her in my corner all the time and just knowing she has my best interest is huge," Davis said.
Eberle's coaching investment has been a positive for Davis and so has having a returning All-American in Lexi Kilfoyl as a teammate.
"You just try to watch her every move because she is proof of what hard work can do," Davis said of Kilfoyl. "She works her butt off and on top of that, is such a great person and so humble. She is a great resource to have."
Coming into her first season, Davis acknowledges the goal is to always to win a World Series, but she also notes that building a family culture within the program has been a priority for the team.
"We are family, we would do anything for each other," Davis said. "We have each other for every aspect of life, and we are all getting to grow together. I just love this team so much."
When you join Cowgirl Softball, you quickly learn that when they say "family," they mean it. That's why, although she's almost eight hours away from her hometown, Davis feels right at home in Stillwater.
