Cowgirl Softball Opens Fall Season This Weekend
September 29, 2023 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER — Cowgirl Softball begins their fall season tomorrow, Sept. 30, as the Cowgirls travel to Conway, Ark., for their lone road game this fall against Central Arkansas. OSU returns home the next day, Sunday, Oct. 1, to take on Wichita State at 3 p.m. inside Cowgirl Stadium.
Coach Kenny Gajewski and co. welcome 11 newcomers to Stillwater this season, with eight freshmen joining the ranks along with a handful of transfer portal additions.
Katie Kutz, the No. 6 recruit in the national class by Softball America, earned Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year honors as a junior and again as a senior. During her senior year, she compiled a 19-0 mark in the circle with a 0.45 earned run average, striking out 268 batters while allowing just 24 hits in 109 innings.
Karli Godwin, the No. 8 recruit in the nation by Extra Inning Softball, earned Gatorade North Carolina Player of the Year honors during her senior year and posted a .731 batting average with 20 home runs. She scored 64 runs, walked 35 times and struck out just once in 131 plate appearances.
Not only are the Cowgirls loaded with talent from their incoming class, but are also powered by transfers Jilyen Poullard, Macy Graf and Caroline Wang.
A senior utility player, Poullard was a top performer for McNeese State in 2021 and 2022, as she picked up all-conference honors both seasons she was with the team.
Graf, a sophomore infielder from Aledo, Texas, began her first year of collegiate softball at Mississippi State University, starting 30 games and playing in 40, batting .291 with a .450 on-base percentage and a .407 slugging percentage. She was fifth on the team in runs and reached base in 30 games.
Caroline Wang, a senior catcher from Paris, Tenn., and transfer from Liberty University, started 206 games in four years at Liberty, where she tied for fifth in program history in career sacrifice flies (seven), sixth in career homers (35), seventh in career RBI (135), tied for seventh in extra-base hits (74), eighth in total bases (326), ninth in slugging percentage (.517) and caught four no-hitters, which is tied for the most in program history.
During the summer, the Cowgirls enhanced their staff with the addition of pitching coach Carrie Eberle. Eberle spent the 2023 season as a pitching coach at Lipscomb University.
The Charlotte, N.C. native pitched for the Cowgirls from 2020-2021, earning All-American honors both years. In her two seasons in Stillwater, she went 36-5 with a 1.13 earned run average and posted 224 strikeouts in 266.1 innings. The 2020 season was cut short due to the COVID pandemic, but in her lone full season with OSU, she was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and helped lead the Cowgirls to the 2021 Women's College World Series.
The All-American status runs through Stillwater with All-American pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl as she returns for her final season as a Cowgirl. Named a third-team All-American and first-team all-region by the NFCA last season, Kilfoyl went 16-5 with a 1.70 earned run average and struck out 130 in 139.2 innings of work.
