Cowgirl Tennis Has Big Day in San Francisco

STILLWATER – Members of the Oklahoma State women's tennis team completed their second day of play at the Battle of the Bay in San Francisco, California, on Friday.
The Cowgirls went a combined 7-1 on the day, including three ranked singles wins and two over top-25 ranked opponents. OSU also put two doubles teams in the semifinals, as well as had two athletes advance to the singles semifinals in Ayumi Miyamoto and Ange Oby Kajuru.
The day began with doubles action, as the two seed pair of Miyamoto and Kajuru along with Lucia Peyre and her partner Savannah Broadus from Pepperdine each picked up second round victories. Miyamoto and Kajurudefeated Misaki Kobayashi and Mariia Vyshkina from Fresno State, 8-3, to advance to tomorrow's semifinals. Simultaneously, Peyre and Broadus pulled off the upset over the Georgia duo Ayseful Mert and Dasha Vidmanova, 8-7 (7-1).
The two doubles teams will meet tomorrow morning with a trip to the Battle of the Bay doubles final on the line. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
Later in the day, singles action continued with the second and third rounds taking place. Fifth-seeded Miyamoto turned in the first Cowgirl singles win of the day, defeating TCU's Destinee Martins, 6-4, 6-2. Peyre then completing an impressive comeback win, upsetting her doubles partner and 23rd-ranked Broadus, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3. Kajuru rounded out the trio of second-round singles wins when she bested VCU's Emma Valetta, 6-1, 6-1.
In the quarterfinals, Miyamoto pulled off the biggest upset of the day, defeating top seed and nationally ranked No. 6 and top seed Dasha Vidmanova, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals. Kajuru also claimed her spot in the semifinals, besting No. 83 Nikki Redelijk, 6-1, 6-0. Peyre's run in the singles bracket came to a close, falling to Amelia Honer, 6-3, 6-3.
Singles action will continue tomorrow as Miyamoto and Kajuru will compete with a chance for an all-OSU final, should they both win. Both of their matches are scheduled to begin at 12:45 p.m. CT.
Weather delays ruled the day at the USTA Intercollegiate Championships in San Diego, where four Cowgirls were slated for singles and doubles action. Play will resume tomorrow morning with a pair of Cowgirl doubles teams scheduled for a 10 a.m. CT start.
