Cowgirl Tennis Wraps Up First Day on West Coast

STILLWATER – Members of the Oklahoma State women's tennis team had a successful first day of play across two tournaments in California on Thursday, combining for an 8-1 mark.
The day began with three Cowgirls playing doubles in the Battle of the Bay in San Francisco. In their first match as partners, the second-seeded duo of returner Ayumi Miyamoto and Iowa State transfer Ange Oby Kajuru defeated the University of San Francisco's Azaria Hayes and Simran Chhabra, 8-4. Lucia Peyre, partnering with Savannah Broadus from Pepperdine, followed that with a win of her own, defeating the TCU duo of Helena Narmont and Margaret Polk, 8-5.
Both winning doubles teams will be back in action tomorrow as Peyre and Broadus take on fourth seed Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova of Georgia, while Miyamoto and Kajuru will meet the Fresno State tandem of Misaki Kobayashi and Mariia Vyshkina. Both matches are slated for 11 a.m. CT.
Later in the day, all three Cowgirls began singles play with a win. Peyre was the first to capture her victory, defeating Colorado's Mila Stanojevic, 6-2, 6-1. Fifth-seeded Miyamoto then outlasted Stanford's India Houghton in a thriller, winning, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Kajuru, the four seed, closed the day with a, 6-3, 6-3, win over Aya El Sayed of Colorado.
Miyamoto and Peyre will both continue singles competition at 2 p.m. C.T. tomorrow, with Miyamoto set to face Destinee Martins of TCU, while Peyre will play her doubles partner, third-seeded Savannah Broadus from Pepperdine. Kajuru will draw a matchup with Virginia Commonwealth's Emma Valletta at 3 p.m. C.T.
In southern California, four Cowgirls began singles play at the USTA Intercollegiate Championships in San Diego. LSU transfer Safiya Carrington was the first to take the court, earning the win in her Cowgirl debut by besting BYU's Kendall Kovick, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Raquel Gonzalez followed that with a win of her own, defeating Kaytlin Taylor of Cal State-Fullerton, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Top-seeded Anastasiya Komar, also an LSU transfer, fell to Cal-State Fullerton's Natalie Duffy 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 6-3, but two seed Kristina Novak earned a win over Silvia Maria Costache of Kansas, 6-3, 6-3, to advance.
Gonzalez will be the first to take the court in San Diego tomorrow for the Cowgirls, facing five seed Andjela Skrobonja from San Diego State at Noon C.T. Shortly after, Carrington will take on six seed Elizabeth Goldsmith of the University of San Diego and Novak will play Cal State-Fullerton's Jose Usereau at 12:15 p.m. C.T.
Doubles play will begin tomorrow morning in San Diego as well, with Komar and Gonzalez paired as the top seed, taking on the University of San Diego duo of Filippa Bruu-Syversen and Abigail Desiatnikov. The fourth-seeded tandem of Novak and Carrington will face Elys Ventura and Pia Rebec from Colorado. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
