Softball World Cup nearing for Oklahoma State’s Maxwell and Team USA
June 26, 2023 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's Kelly Maxwell and the USA Softball Women's National Team will soon compete at the 2023 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women's World Cup.
The event marks the second time Maxwell has represented Team USA in competition, as the left-hander from Friendswood, Texas didn't allow an earned run in six innings of work for the U.S. at the 2022 Japan All-Star Series.
At the 2023 WBSC World Cup, Maxwell and the top-ranked Americans compete in group stage action from July 11-15 in Dublin, Ireland. The other nations in Team USA's group are Chinese Taipei, Australia, Great Britain, Ireland and Botswana.
The U.S. faces Chinese Taipei at 7 a.m. CT on July 11 followed by a pair of 8 a.m. CT matchups against Botswana and Australia the following two days. The opening round concludes with matchups against Great Britain at 8 a.m. CT and Ireland at 11:30 a.m. CT on July 14. Broadcast information for all games will be announced at a later date.
Led by head coach Heather Tarr and assistant coaches Cindy Ball-Malone, Tony Baldwin and Tim Walton, the U.S. looks to claim its fourth-consecutive WBSC Women's World Championship title, having won the past three WBSC World Championships held in Birmingham, Ala. (2022), Chiba, Japan (2018) and Surrey, B.C., Canada (2016).
A two-time All-American and three-time first-team All-Big 12 honoree, Maxwell ranks among the top left-handed pitchers in the world. She has made four trips with Oklahoma State to the Women's College World Series and was a featured performer on three of those four squads. Over the span of her Cowgirl career, she sports a 1.58 earned run average, has struck out 746 batters in 494.2 innings of work and has limited opponents to a .158 batting average.
