Hinson-Tolchard Earns Spot On Palmer Cup International Team
April 25, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma State women's golfer Maddison Hinson-Tolchard was named to the Arnold Palmer Cup International Team on Tuesday, automatically earning a spot through her top-6 placement in the final International Team rankings.
In the summer of 2023, the Arnold Palmer Cup is set to host some of the game's best women's and men's collegiate players from the United States and their International counterparts. This is the 27th rendition of the Arnold Palmer Cup, and will be held at Laurel Valley Golf Club, located outside Ligonier, Pa., spanning from June 8-10.
Both the USA and International teams consist of 12 golfers, with the first six being selected from the top of the final spring Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking. The remaining players will be selected by using five committee picks and one coach's pick.
Using the GolfStat NCAA Player Ranking as a base, the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes and a penalty for poor finishes. The ranking also contains a strength of schedule component.
The Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), beginning in 1997. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament, matching the United States against a team of International players.
In a nod to its prestige, the Palmer Cup has been played at some of the world's greatest courses, including The Old Course at St. Andrews, The Royal County Down, Royal Portrush, Baltusrol, The Honors Course and Cherry Hills. Since 2018, the Palmer Cup is the only major tournament which features men and women playing side-by-side as partners.
Since the event's inception, over 125 Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on the PGA, DP World or LPGA tours, with more than 75 players claiming over 310 victories, including 2022 major champion Jennifer Kupcho. Additionally, 34 tournament alumni have represented either Europe or the USA in the Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup or Solheim Cup.
Hailing from Perth, Australia, Hinson-Tolchard marks the program's third player to ever be named to the event, joining Isabella Fierro and Maja Stark, who both played for the International Team in 2021.
It has been a busy week for Hinson-Tolchard, who just took home the individual title at the Big 12 Championship on Sunday. The win was her first of the season and third of her collegiate career.
In addition to her trophy, the standout junior carded the 50th par-or-better round of her career on Saturday, breaking the program record of 49 previously set by former Cowgirls Kenzie Neisen.
After being named the Big 12 Player of the Year and a WGCA Second Team All-American in 2022, Hinson-Tolchard has elevated her play this season, leading the team in stroke average, rounds in the 60's and par-or-better rounds.
She has also finished top-20 in all nine tournaments played this season, including six top-10 outings.
Along with her rise in the Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking, Hinson-Tolchard has also seen a surge in both the GolfStat NCAA Player Ranking and World Amateur Golf Rankings, currently placing 10th and 66th, respectively.
