Cowgirls Take Team, Individual Leads At Big 12 Championship
April 22, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
DALLAS, Texas – No. 23 Oklahoma State women's golf played its way into both the team and individual leads in the second round at the Big 12 Championship at the Dallas Athletic Club on Saturday.
The Cowgirls combined to shoot a 10-under 278 at the par-72, 6,215-yard course, the best round by any team thus far at the tournament. With the mark, OSU equaled its lowest 18-hole score of the spring schedule after shooting a 278 in the opening round at the ICON Invitational in March.
At 4-under, Oklahoma State owns a two-stroke edge over second-place Texas Tech, who began the day in first.
Three different Cowgirls fired rounds in the 60's on Saturday, and the team ended the afternoon tied for the most birdies in the field with 38.
"They played very solid and steady throughout the entire round today," head coach Greg Robertson said. "It was great to finish with three rounds in the 60's as we head into the final day.
"It's going to be a very competitive day with some very good teams bunched together and a mental test with the weather conditions that are forecasted. These are the things you prepare for all year."
Maddison Hinson-Tolchard and Clemence Martin are both tied for first-place alongside Iowa State's Pimkwan Chookaew at 4-under with one round left to play.
Hinson-Tolchard began the day in second, but a strong 3-under 69 elevated her into the three-way tie atop the leaderboard. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Year was steady as ever, carding four birdies and just a lone bogey on the day.
Additionally, Saturday marked the 50th par-or-better round in Hinson-Tolchard's career, breaking the program record of 49 previously set by Kenzie Neisen.
Meanwhile, Martin carded a 5-under 67 in the second round to mount her next to Hinson-Tolchard in first. The sophomore's 67 is her lowest round since the Schooner Fall Classic in September and is tied for the lowest score shot by any player this weekend.
Following a bogey on her second hole, Martin went on to play a clean round, sinking five birdies and surrendering zero bogeys throughout her last 16 holes.
Han-Hsuan Yu fired a 3-under 69, raising her 17 spots into a tie for ninth. She found her stride on par-5's, shooting 5-under on such holes.
Yu is looking for her second straight top-10 finish at the Big 12 Championship after finishing tied for third in 2022.
Thitaporn Saithip continued her steady weekend with a 1-over 73 and landing in a tie for 20th. The freshman ended Saturday with momentum, going birdie-par to close her round.
Rina Tatematsu shot a 5-over 77 to end the day in a tie for 37th.
Oklahoma State enters Sunday's championship round looking for its 11th Big 12 team title and 11th individual champion in program history. The Cowgirls have swept both the team and individual trophies six times since the conference's first tournament in 1997.
The Cowgirls are scheduled to tee off tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. CT alongside the Red Raiders and third-place Baylor.
Live scoring will once again be available on GolfStat.com. In addition, the championship round will also be aired on Big 12 Now on ESPN+, beginning at 12:30 p.m. CT.
