Cowgirl Long Jumpers Steal the Show on First Day of Multi-Meet Weekend
April 22, 2023 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State track & field completed its first day of action on the weekend at the John Jacobs and Payton Jordan Invitationals in Norman, Okla., and Palo Alto, Calif, respectively, with several Cowboys and Cowgirls dropping impressive performances.
At the Payton Jordan Invitational in California, Isai Rodriguez got back to his winning ways, coming from behind to win the men's 10,000 Meters with a likely regional qualifying time of 28:20.93. His time Friday was his best since the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships, where he finished as a second-team All-American overall. Teammate Alex Maier ran his second 10K of the outdoor season and finished right behind Rodriguez, placing fourth overall with a time of 28:33.04.
In the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase, Victor Shitsama and Jonas Price impressed with new personal bests. Both runners' previous best came in this year's Stanford Invitational.
Shitsama and Washington's Ed Trippas ran wire-to-wire for the lead during the entire race, but Trippas narrowly outlasted Shitsama by .10 seconds. Despite an early fall on the water jump, Shitsama set a personal best in the event for the second time this season, crossing the finish line in 8:31.50. His finish is the third-fastest time in the NCAA this season, as well as the third-fastest finish in program history.
Price also showed improvement from his previous race, setting a personal best by nearly 10 seconds. His 8:46.77 finish puts him on OSU's leaderboard for the first time.
In the women's 3K Steeplechase, true freshman Payton Hinkle set a huge personal-best time of 10:17.86, the fifth-fastest in OSU history. A drastic improvement since this year's Sooner Invitational, Hinkle exploded to beat her previous time by more than 30 seconds. Her performance is the fastest by a Cowgirl since teammate Taylor Roe in the 2021 Arkansas Twilight.
In Norman, Okla., for the John Jacobs Invitational, Cowgirl jumpers dominated the Long Jump, with OSU holding down each of the top six places on the final leaderboard. OSU Long Jump record holder Bailey Golden led the pack as she leaped 5.92 Meters to claim the top spot.
Olivija Vaitaityte and Saara Hakanen claimed the other podium spots with their 5.80-meter and 5.71-meter jumps, respectively. Winny Bii, Allison Bliss and Jenna Sanders claimed the remaining spots, with each tabbing a respective collegiate personal best.
On the men's side, Alex Samples and Philip Frank also reached the podium in the Long Jump. Samples leaped 6.88-meters on his fourth attempt to claim second place, his best placement in the orange and black, accounting for indoor and outdoor competition. Frank's 6.76-meter leap earned him a third place finish, which is also his best finish for OSU.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will continue the weekend's festivities tomorrow, with action at Stanford kicking off at 5:15 p.m. CT and 10 a.m. CT in Norman.
