Gabija Galvydyte Opens with Impressive Double as Cowgirls Wrap up Four-Meet Weekend
April 15, 2023 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State distance runner Fouad Messaoudi took over the NCAA lead and broke the school record in the 1,500 Meters Saturday night, highlighting the final day of OSU's quad-meet weekend across the country.
Messaoudi returned to the track for the first time since taking home a pair of NCAA titles in impressive fashion, going toe-to-toe with NCAA legend Cooper Teare and field that included several national champions and collegiate record holders. He sat behind Teare for a majority of the race before trading the lead with Teare all the way to the line, where he ultimately took second overall with a time of 3:35.16.
In the process, Messaoudi became the fourth-fastest NCAA 1,500 Meter runner of all-time and moves into fourth in the world this year in the event. He also shattered the previous school record by over two seconds in just his first race of the outdoor season, while defeating three high-level pros and was the highest-finishing collegian in the field.
On the women's side, Gabija Galvydyte returned for her second race of the weekend in the 1,500 Meters after competing in the 800 Meters Friday night. Galvydyte opened with a nearly five-second personal best in the 1,500 with her time of 4:14.76, which gives her a pair of high-level marks with her 2:03.21 800-Meter time Friday.
Meanwhile, at the Tom Jones Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., Mehdi Yanouri made OSU history, breaking Paul Larkins' 37-year-old record in the outdoor 800 Meters. Yanouri crossed the finish line with a scorching time of 1:46.96 to beat Larkins' long-standing record. With his finish, Yanouri bested his previous best time by nearly two seconds set just two weeks ago at the Texas Relays.
DJ McArthur also had an impressive showcase in the 400 Meters, tabbing a 46.05 personal best finish outdoors to go with a heat victory. McArthur's performance is also the fifth-fastest in OSU history.
The Cowgirl 4x400 Meter squad set the fastest time of their outdoor season in the final event of the day. Ansley Scott, Tamara Woodley, Tori Ortiz and Yasmine Johnson put forth a 3:36.29 finish, a nearly one-second improvement from the team's performance at the Jim Click Invitational last weekend. Their finish is the sixth-fastest in OSU history.
At the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla., Crayton Shaw had an impressive showcase for the second half of the men's Decathlon, leading to his first podium visit as a Cowboy. Shaw, after starting the day in fourth place, jumped up to second after tabbing top three marks in all of day two's events, including two first-place finishes in the 110 Meters Hurdles and the Pole Vault. His 6,417 points is a career best and moves him into the top five of OSU's leaderboard in just his first career Decathlon in the orange and black.
Up next, the Cowboys and Cowgirls will look towards another multi-meet weekend at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., and the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla.
