Meet Notes (PDF)
The Basics
No. 5 Oklahoma State Equestrian will travel to California this weekend for two meets, first taking on No. 10 UC Davis before facing No. 9 and Big 12 foe Fresno State. The Cowgirls are coming off one of their biggest wins of the season, knocking off No. 3 TCU, 11-9, in Stillwater. UC Davis enters the meet with a 3-6 record, including a 2-1 mark in ECAC conference play. Fresno State is 2-7 on the season with a 1-4 record against Big 12 opponents.
About the Cowgirls
The Cowgirls are led by 24th-year head coach Larry Sanchez, fourth-year assistant Laura Brainard and first-year assistant Carter Anderson.
Fresh Face on Staff
Carter Anderson joined the Cowgirl staff as the Jumping Seat assistant coach after one season at UT-Martin, where she was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Equestrian Assistant Coach of the Year. In her one season on the UT-Martin staff, Anderson oversaw a group of jumping seat riders that was amongst the ECAC conference's best. The jumping unit collected 44 victories and 10 MOPs in fences to go along with 38 wins and eight MOPs in flat.
Defending Our Turf
The Cowgirls have been dominant in Stillwater, winning 29 of their last 31 home meets dating back to 2018, including a stretch of 20 in a row. OSU is 4-1 at home this season, with three of the wins coming against ranked opponents (Georgia, Baylor and TCU).
Making History
Oklahoma State entered the 2022-23 season as the defending NCEA National Champions after winning the first overall title in program history last spring. The Cowgirls also became the first women's team in OSU history to win a national championship in any sport.
Conference Leaders
The Cowgirls went 9-1 against Big 12 opponents last season, including two wins on their way to a title at the Big 12 Championship and two more at the NCEA National Championships. This year they are 4-1 in conference meets, putting them atop the Big 12 standing with the conference tournament quickly approaching.
Well-Deserved Recognition
Oklahoma State has now had two riders be recognized with monthly awards this season. In November, Jojo Roberson was named both the NCEA and Big 12 Horsemanship Rider of the Month after going 2-0 while earning MOP in both meets. Sydney North became the latest Cowgirl to earn a monthly award this week as she was named the Big 12 Fences Rider of the Month for February. North went 3-0 in the month while earning two MOPs along the way.
Oklahoma State Wins Would...
- Improve the Cowgirls to 13-2 in the Fresno State series.
- Improve the Cowgirls to 3-0 in the UC Davis series.
- Extend its season-best win streak to five.
- Make it five-straight wins against ranked opponents.
Coach's Thoughts
"We're excited for our trip to California," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "It'll be a good test for us at this point in the season."Â
Cowgirls To Watch
• Senior Sydney North has been spectacular to begin the spring, improving to 3-0 on the month with her 83-80 Fences win against TCU. North was named the Big 12 Fences Rider of the Month for her efforts in the month of February and will look to stay hot into March.
• Riley Hogan has been one of the most reliable riders on the team since joining the Cowgirls as a freshman last season, tallying another Fences win and claiming her second MOP of the season against TCU on Saturday. Hogan is now 8-1 this season and 14-3 since the beginning of last year.
• Freshman June Roberson is coming into her own as a weapon for the Cowgirls, winning another Horsemanship point against TCU. Roberson has now rattled off three-straight wins after opening the season 0-3.
• Hannah Lovrien has had an excellent start to the spring season for the Cowgirls, winning 72-71 to help OSU close out its win over TCU. The fifth-year senior is 3-0 in the spring with an MOP against Georgia after starting her season 0-3.
• Grace McReynolds continues to quietly be one of Oklahoma State's most consistent performers, winning her point 76- 67 against TCU on Saturday. The junior is now 5-3 on the season in Flat, with four of her wins coming against ranked opponents.
