October 28, 2023 | Cowgirl Soccer
ROUND ROCK, Texas – Oklahoma State dropped a 1-0 match to Oklahoma in the opening round of the Big 12 Soccer Championship Saturday at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.
The loss snapped OSU's nine-game unbeaten streak against its Bedlam rival as the seventh-seeded Cowgirls concluded their season with a 12-8-0 record. OSU is now 31-10-5 all time against OU; the 10th-seeded Sooners improved to 8-9-2 on the year with their first win over OSU since 2018.
In a scoreless opening half, OSU outshot the Sooners by a 6-5 margin, but OU owned a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Mollie Breiner kept OU off the scoreboard early, heading a shot by Cailey England out for a team save just 90 seconds into the match.
The Cowgirls had several scoring opportunities in the first half, but OU goalie Olivia Ramey made four saves, including three during a two-minute span, to help send the game to intermission scoreless.
The two teams continued battling for a goal in the second half, but the defenses held strong. A leaping save by Grace Gordon in the 57th minute kept the match scoreless as she tipped a shot by Emma Hawkins over the crossbar.
But the Sooners would finally break through with 14:52 remaining when Esalenna Galekhutle dribbled past a pair of defenders and delivered a shot from the top right of the 18-yard box into the net.
Gordon finished with five saves in the match, while Ramey tallied seven for the Sooners.
OU finished the match with a 12-11 edge in shots, while recording 11 corner kicks to three for the Cowgirls.
