Plott, Alvarez Wrap Up at U23 Worlds

TIRANA, Albania – Oklahoma State wrestlers Dustin Plott and Sammy Alvarez both saw their runs at the U23 World Championships come to a close Tuesday.
Plott, competing in the 79 kg bracket for the United States, received a bye into the round of 16, where he squared off with Masaki Sato of Japan. Sato held Plott scoreless in the first period to gain a slim 2-0 edge, but the Cowboy fired back in the second to even the match at 2-2. In the end, Plott's late comeback was not enough as Sato took the match by criteria.
Due to Sato's eventual exit in the quarterfinal round, Plott did not receive a bid to the consolation bracket, thus ending his tournament.
In the 65 kg division, Alvarez faced Team USA's Brock Hardy in the first qualifying round. Alvarez, who was looking to improve upon his 1-2 finish at the last year's U23 World Championships, started strong and owned a 4-2 lead after the first period. Hardy found his offense in the second period, however, to win the match by a score of 12-7.
Like Plott, Alvarez did not get an opportunity in consolations, as Hardy fell to finalist Ziraddin Bayramov (Azerbaijan) in the quarterfinals.
Despite the finish, both Cowboys will look to ride their world-level experience into the start of the NCAA season. Oklahoma State is set to open the 2023-24 season on Friday, November 10, when it hosts Bucknell at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
