From Denmark To Stillwater
September 16, 2022 | Cowgirl Golf
Oklahoma State women's golf recently added freshman Cecilie Leth-Nissen to the program prior to the start of the 2022-23 season.
Â
She has faced a unique journey thus far in her young playing career, but it ultimately led to her welcomed arrival in Stillwater.
Â
Leth-Nissen was born in Herlev, Denmark, where she spent the majority of her amateur playing career. Despite never traveling to the United States until this past summer, she brings a wealth of international experience to the team.
Â
While playing in Europe, Leth-Nissen captured four career individual tournament titles. Just this past June, she won the Smørum Ladies Open, shooting 70-68-70 to win the event by four strokes.
Â
She has been playing on the Danish national team since she was 13-years old and competed in nearly 30 events since the 2021 summer.
Â
The process for Leth-Nissen to end up in Stillwater came down to the last minute. Head coach Greg Robertson and assistant coach Maddi Swaney noticed she was uncommitted late into the recruiting cycle, and pounced on their unexpected chance.
Â
"I had not met her in person before she came here, just through Zoom and that kind of stuff," Robertson said. "We could tell she was a good person and came from a good family."
Â
When asked what stood out about the Denmark native, Swaney said it was her results that caught her eye.
Â
"She had a lot of success as an amateur. So, just seeing her results, that was great."
Â
The Cowgirl coaching staff reached out to Leth-Nissen late in the summer, forcing them to move quick with the season rapidly approaching, all the while never getting the opportunity to actually meet face-to-face.
Â
Fortunately, Leth-Nissen was just as compelled to Oklahoma State as the coaches were to her.
Â
"The training facilities here are amazing," Leth-Nissen said. "The course is really good. Then, I liked the coaches, so that was important to me too."
Â
The last few months have seen a lot of rapid changes for Leth-Nissen, but that hasn't hindered her ability on the course.
Â
Just weeks after arriving on campus, the freshman qualified for the starting lineup of the team's season-opening tournament, the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach Golf Links, a memorable place to debut on American soil and start your college career, to be sure.
Now that she has settled in and got her first tournament under her belt, Leth-Nissen is excited for what's to come during her time in Stillwater.
Â
"I think [I'm looking forward to] developing, both as a person and as a golfer, and see what I can do while I'm at OSU," she said.
