Cowgirl Equestrian’s Sanchez Agrees To New Contract

STILLWATER – Fresh off leading Oklahoma State to the title at the 2022 NCEA Dual Discipline National Championship, Cowgirl equestrian head coach Larry Sanchez has agreed to a new five-year contract.
The OSU Board of Regents approved the contract last week. It will keep Sanchez leading the program through June 2027.
"Coach Sanchez has built OSU Equestrian from scratch and created a national championship program," said OSU Director of Athletics Chad Weiberg. "Under his consistent leadership, talented student-athletes from all over the country are attracted to Oklahoma State, are great representatives of OSU during their time on campus and continue to be long after graduation.
"We look forward to Coach Sanchez leading our program for many years to come."
The only head coach in program history, Sanchez is coming off his 23rd season at the helm and his most successful as his Cowgirls claimed the first women's national title at OSU in any sport. Along the way, his team posted the best record in school history at 15-2, captured its eighth Big 12 Conference championship and added to its growing list of All-Americans.
"It's great to have the university support me and what I'm doing here and trust me to run this program for another five years," Sanchez said. "I love this university, and I couldn't be prouder to be a representative of the university. This just really confirms the belief they have in me to do the job and makes me want to continue to do an even better job for them."
Sanchez was part of launching OSU's equestrian program in 1999. Under his leadership, 16 of his qualifying teams have placed in the top four at the national event, and OSU has claimed five Western national titles. He has coached over 20 riders to individual national championships and 13 riders to reserve championships.
Since 2011, the Cowgirls have earned 66 NCEA All-America selections. A total of 17 Cowgirls have been named a Big 12 Rider of the Year in their respective disciplines, and OSU also has 48 All-Big 12 honorees since the conference began recognizing those in 2012.
The Cowgirls have also excelled in the classroom. OSU has placed nearly 80 student-athletes on the NCEA All-Academic Team, while the program counts 174 Academic All-Big 12 honorees and four Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year performers.
Sanchez was named the 2022 Heritage Equine Equipment Coach of the Year by the NCEA, his second time to earn that distinction, and he is a five-time Big 12 Coach of the Year honoree.
