Miyamoto and Rioux Achieve All-America Status
May 25, 2022 | Cowgirl Tennis
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – For the second time in their Cowgirl careers, Oklahoma State's elite doubles tandem of Ayumi Miyamoto and Lisa Marie Rioux earned All-America status with their victory Wednesday night at the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Illinois.
The dominant court one and first-team All-Big 12 duo battled out a hard-fought first set winning, 7-6, in their contest against North Carolina's Cameron Morra and Carson Tanguilig. Following the narrow win, the duo turned on the jets, taking six out of the next seven games to secure All-America status after a blowout second set winning the match, 7-6, 6-1.
"I'm so proud of Lisa and Ayumi," OSU head coach Chris Young said. "Becoming an All-American for the second time is a great accomplishment. They have put in the hard work and deserve this honor. I am excited for them to continue to compete this week as they are as strong as any team left here."
The Cowgirls have 16 all-Americans in program history. Rioux and Miyamoto were All-Americans in 2020 as well. Additionally, OSU has had at least one player achieve the milestone each season since 2014, with Miyamoto and Rioux extending that streak with today's victory.
The tandem moved into this evening's round of 16 with a near-perfect performance in yesterday's match that was never in question. The Cowgirl duo came out of the gate swinging, winning eight straight games and 12 out of 13 overall in the match to take a 6-0, 6-1 complete domination of the nation's fourth-ranked and the tournament's fourth-seeded Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura of Georgia Tech.
Miyamoto and Rioux advance to tomorrow's quarterfinal where they will face Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova of Texas A&M.
