Sawangkaew Advances To Round Of 32, Rioux Falls On Day 1 Of NCAA Individual Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Oklahoma State's Mhai Sawangkaew advanced to the round of 32 at the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship with an impressive victory, while Lisa Marie Rioux came up short on Monday afternoon at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Illinois.
OSU's Big 12 Freshman of the Year Mhai Sawangakew, represented OSU first in singles action. In commanding fashion, the first-team All-Big 12 selection dominated 18th-ranked, 16th-seeded and back-to-back Conference USA Player of the Year, Yuliia Starodubtseva of Old Dominion.
Sawangkaew took control of the match from the start, cruising to a first set victory. The second set was back and forth, but Sawangkaew found her rhythm in the latter half of the set to pull away for the 6-2, 6-4 victory to advance to tomorrow's round of 32.
Cowgirl veteran, two-time all-American and all-Big 12 first-team selection Lisa Marie Rioux closed out her decorated singles career at Oklahoma State this afternoon. After taking the three-straight games to clinch the first set, Rioux battled but came up short against California's Haley Giavara, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6.
Sawangkaew advances to the round of 32 tomorrow with the potential to earn All-American status with a victory at 1:30 p.m. Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto will begin the first round of doubles tomorrow night at 7.
