Cowgirl Tennis Comes Up Short In Big 12 Semifinal

FORT WORTH, Texas — Oklahoma State's 11th-ranked women's tennis team came up short in its Big 12 Championship semifinal matchup against No. 4 Texas with a 4-1 setback on Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
OSU had a solid start to the afternoon, claiming the doubles point after notching convincing victories on courts one and three. Texas started things off with a 6-0 win on court two as No. 75 Kylie Collins and Charlotte Chavatipon got the better of 72nd-ranked Mhai Sawangkaew and Martina Zerulo.
The Cowgirls quickly responded on the third court, as Dariya Detkovskaya and Oona Orpana picked up a huge win. After dropping the first two games, the OSU tandem never turned back, claiming five out of the last six games en route to a dominating 6-2 victory over Texas' Sabina Zeynalova and Bella Zamarripa.
OSU called upon the nation's 18th-ranked duo of Ayumi Miyamoto and Lisa Marie Rioux to secure the early edge. The Cowgirl pair put together an impressive performance, downing No. 15 Peyton Stearns and Allura Zamarripa, 6-3, claiming the doubles point for OSU.
OSU got off to a slow start in singles action and could not recover. Texas scored four straight points to seal the victory, starting with Vivian Ovrootsky's 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ayumi Miyamoto. Lisa Marie Rioux fell short against No. 2 Peyton Stearns, 6-0, 6-1 and Oona Orpana lost to No. 118 Charlotte Chavatipon, 6-1, 6-2. No. 79 Sabina Zeynalova beat Martina Zerulo, 6-2, 6-1, to earn the match-clinching point for the Longhorns.
Sofia Rojas battled out a tightly-contested first set but came up short, 7-6. In the second set, she was tied at two apiece with Allura Zamarripa when her match was halted.
Mhai Sawangkaew went point for point with 58th-ranked Kylie Collins but bested the Longhorn in the first set, 7-6. Sawangkaew led 2-1 in set two when her match was called.
OSU will find out its postseason standing Monday during the 2022 NCAA Selection Day.
